Feeding a new little pig: how much is too much?

aerosa1 Feb 21, 2005 03:19 PM

I just acquired a yearling who never seems satisfied. He was being fed 1 pinky every week by the breeder, but on his first feed with us he easily ate three and seems to be wanting more..by that I mean, he isn't sitting still to digest like my other hogs. He's all over the place, rooting and climbing up to the lid. I don't want to over-feed. Normally the snake lets me know when it's satisfied...but he's such a little guy with a BIG apetite.

Does anyone have an opinion on how much is too much?

Thanks,
Rose

not to knock the breeder and I am certainly no expert.....BUT IMO that is far too little to be feeding the snake....looking back at my feeding records, my hog was born 6/20/03, and when I got her in Feb 04 (only a couple days over a year ago! )she was 7" long and could eat 2 pinkies every week and did so on a pretty consistent basis. By a year old she was eating 2-3 a week, depending on what she felt like eating. I think you can very reasonably offer your new baby 2 pinkies a week for a while and if he seems to be comfortable with that, up it to 3. How long is he? Mine is currently about 14" (just a guess, need to measure) and ate 5 pinkes last time, I'm thinking it's time to move to a larger food item like a crawler....I think her head might finally be big enough! So, feed more, and hopefully your guy will settle down--I think a very active hog is a discontent hog looking for some need to be satisfied, and it definitely seems to me that he;s hungry.
