Suggest a Species

bast Feb 21, 2005 05:16 PM

Hello All,

I am thinking about getting a new species
of snake to try breeding. I am looking for something
small to medm sized that is not TOO hard to breed.
I already breed California kingsnakes and bearded dragons.
I am thinking about getting viper boas (Candoia aspera).
Any other suggestions?

Thank you for your advice,

Brian

They average 3 foot, breed like crazy with no brumation, come in a few different colors and won't need lizard scenting for their first few meals like many candoia require. They're neat little snakes as well.

rosy boas, western hognoses. how big of a species are you talking about?

Depends what you like and don't like. Do you want something as easy as corns? Are you looking/expecting to make money? There's so much to choose from. Really depends on the snakes that you like. Duffy

How about a species that is unusual in captivity, rarely captive bred but occasionally wild caught? Some examples would be sunbeam snakes, calabar pythons, or some kind of racer. (I don't know about how easy or hard these snakes are to breed, or even their max size)
It's entirely your choice of course, but making available captive bred specimens of a mostly wc species, would be for lack of better words, really really cool.

and something I'd like to do personally, but what exactly is out there that people would flock to?

Drosera Feb 25, 2005 01:31 PM

I don't think it's something that people would exactly flock to, so much as a small niche market. For example, I occasinally daydream about breeding those european rat snakes E. longissima. And in a few years I'll be in the market for a cb aru scrub, and I have never seen that locality captive bred.

The main catches, is I don't think there's all too much money in it, and you may have to acclimate your initial breeding stock to captivity, but if there's a type of unusual snake that's rarely cb, but somethimes imported that you're quite fond of, that'd probably be the thing to go for.

I'm all for ending the "need" for wild caught pets!

An interesting idea.

Thank you,
