Female Western- problem eater

wombat Feb 21, 2005 10:41 PM

Here's Tycho's girlfriend- Isabella. That's a six year old's hand- She's 12 inches to his 18...They were bought together from a re-seller- no real info as to whether they were the same clutch, but I think so.

She is a problem eater- no f/t pinkies, neither brained nor tuna-scented. She has eaten a couple of feeder Rosies, has ignored a couple.

She's getting way too scrawny, I'm pondering the wisdom of giving her tadpoles out of our goldfish pond to get her back up to weight, maybe we'll try a live pinky first... the mega stores have driven all our local pet shops out of town, it's not even that easy to come up with live pinkies anymore.

I bought a female hognose from a clutch born at the end of July last year. Though the breeder claimed she fed regularly, she took a split brained pinkie after the first week I brought her home then nothing else for two months. I tried scenting pinkies with everything under the sun suggested. Finally I tried one thing I ignored that was mentioned occasionally but seemed to weird to be true. That is masking the pinkie scent by washing it in unscented soap. After thawing out a f/t inkie and washing it in unscented Dove soap and leaving her with it for 30 minutes, she took it. She has been doing so weekly for for the last six weeks and is starting to aquire some girth.

She took a live, unscented crawler mouse today- buttfirst, just to be a crazy hog. I think it was the sustained motion that got her. I also increased her heating yesterday, she was more active after that.

Only herpers understand the happiness in the phrase "everybody ate today"

I like that last phrase about 'everybody ate today'....wish my new uro would but I understand they stress easily so I'm not going to freak while she settles in for a couple of days....never thought my hog would be the most consistent eater of the bunch at any given point but hey, stranger things have happened

This AM I discovered this snake had died trying to regurgitate yesterday's meal. Hard to figure out a "why" on this one- it wasn't the size of the prey item...

This was a snake that hadn't ever eaten well but had no acute problems that could be fixed... I knew from the size discrepancy when I bought them that this snake wasn't thriving, had really hoped that I could help her turn around...pretty sad!

I'm so sorry to hear that...especially after what seemed like a positive turnaround.

Best of luck to you.

I was looking on kingsnake.com, when i found your picture of your hognose snake. Mine is the same way. Although mine is just a baby, mine is a very picky eater. I want to fed her something different besides baby pinkies but i do not know what else is O.K. to feed her. Please email me back with some suggestions.
