fortaz and dehydration

dcarlso3 Feb 22, 2005 09:39 AM

Hi I have an argentine that has a URI. He has been on Fortaz for 3 weeks. Lately he has not left his water bowl. I put a tub in his cage that he can fully submerse in on Saturday, and he has not come out of it since. Is this normal or should I worry about this? He is also still off feed.

Thanks

I have not heard of Fortaz being used for URIs so I cannot be of help on that. But I would watch your snakes temps to make sure that they are good. Between 84 to 89 is best for an animal recovering from a RI. If it is dehydrated and soaking for that reason then it probably knows best.
Have you called the vet that gave you the meds. to ask them?

Good luck! And keep us posted.

The temp on the cool side right now is 83.8 deg. The vet said to keep the cool side between 82-85 24/7 until the uri is gone. I did put a call in to the vet, but haven't heard back yet. I am anxious to know if this is normal or not. Hopefully, it is. I'll post again when I find out from the vet.

I have never heard or noticed Fortaz or other cephalosporins causing issues with dehydration. But it is always especially important to keep fresh water available at all times to a snake on almost any kind of drug therapy.
