Differences between boas and pythons?

BloodmanDan Feb 22, 2005 12:27 PM

What are some differences between tree boas and green tree pythons other than the live birth vs. eggs difference?

Thanks in advance for the info!

I'll take a stab at this since nobody else has.

First of all - Geography- GTPs are from Southeast Asia and Australia, while ETBs and ATBs are from Central and South America.

They are an example of what is called convergent evolution, which means they have evolved under similar pressures to end up looking very similar. These looks are decieving. Yes, they are both green in adulthood (typically, although ETBs are usually darker) after undergoing an ontogenetic color change, and they reach similar size proportions. However, there are some major skeletal differences in the skulls. ETBs have a larger head and body. To tell the two apart at a glance remember this: GTPs have consitantly small scales covering the head, while ETBs have scales that increase in size toward the front of the head.

With these physical differences comes some minor husbandry differences.

I got tired of writing and googled this: http://www.corallus.com/etbvsgtp.html
Hope this helps,

I assumed for the most part that you meant GTPS v. ETBs although there are many other tree boas out there (Sanzinia, Candoia ect..)
