Arthur - the big question

el_toro Feb 22, 2005 01:20 PM

OK, as you may recall, I'm very new to the reptile breeding thing and am a little uptight about it. Arthur and Joe (my Saharans) were witnessed mating about six weeks ago. Gestation is supposed to be 4-6 weeks. Barring a later mating (which is entirely possible), she should be due if she's actually gravid. However she's not been scratching around in her nest box or anywhere else, nor has there been any sign of aggression from her toward Joe (she has separate housing ready as soon as there is). She's very heavy and slow, but not really lumpy. I don't really know what to look for, as I've never actually seen a gravid reptile of any flavor.

I caught both of them today for a major cage cleaning and gave Arthur a soak. Here's the shot of her, but it's kind of dark. Any thoughts from those folks with experience in this sort of thing? Does she look gravid or just unbelievably fat?

I've never had any experience with my mali mating with my brothers (we think apollo's a male mimic female).

However, she does look bloated, and when Ares is bloated that means he doesn't want to be disturbed anymore. He usually bloats up when I give him his bath or when I go to take him from laying on me to putting him back in his home.

I do hope she is pregnant though, I know how much you've been looking foward to the pitter patter of little reptilian feet.

That is one mighty fat uro. I sure hope she is gravid with fertile eggs. Good luck and let us know

There's no way she's this big just by food intake. Plus she's so heavy now she didn't even run away when I took the pictures. Still concerns me that she's not digging at all.

it definitely looks like she is just because the rest of her is not fatter too. have you actually put her in the nesting box? like i would set ivan, one of my collareds, in the box and then from there she would have to figure out how to get out of the box. if i was back there holding her and was putting her back in the cage, i would just stick her in it and when the time came she knew exactly where to go

>> have you actually put her in the nesting box?

she knows where the box is, and even sleeps in it sometimes. she just isn't doing any digging - in the box or elsewhere. maybe i'm just an anxious grandma to be.

i am the worst at being the grandmother in waiting so i feel your pain of spazzing about everything. but like a friend told me, they have been doing this for thousands of years without us, they know what they are doing

I was going to say that if her and her boyfriend are in the same enclosure, maybe she wants HIM to do all the digging since he's the one who did "that" to her.

But she could just be waiting.

Good luck and I hope she lays soon if she is pregnant.
