Just wondering if you got your enclosure adjusted and if he ate without forcing.

actually no he hasnt, im kinda worried. i think ive been feeding him too early. ive got the cage at 79 high and 70's low end, and its alwasy 75-90, only 75 when it slipps to its lowest. so i think how i am feeding him is not well, should i do it in a bag, the floor? what time at night?

I was looking over your previous message and did'nt see how old your brb is, what kind of substrate, hides and their location, what time your feeding them, what food item, what size enclosure, exc. (I may have missed this info somewhere but if not this type of info would help narrow down the situation.
What I would do with a young BRB that is not eating is this:
-move into a rubbermaid type enclosure (sweater size with several holes drilled along the sides just below the top edge) with a heat pad underneath one side set at low (you can use a human type heatpad), monitor the temp. at the floor above the pad, use a thermostat to control the temp (when using this setup I personally don't use a thermostat or rheostate; just leave it on low and adjust the floor temp by adding more newspaper above the pad; high end 80, low 70.
-use newspaper substrate while in this setup. Once the snake is eating normally and moved into its permanent home you can use a more attractive substrate (I like Orchid bark covered with a thick layer of moss) and feed in a separate enclosure.
-put small hides on the warm and cool side (I use the base piece of flower pots with a notch knocked out of the side).
-pile moss (the stuff you can buy at home depot for potting plants) on the warm side and keep it damp.
-water bowl it can rest in, though with this setup the humidity will stay over 90% and the snake may not bath (one of my babies always did after a meal).
-leave alone after this change for 5-7 days.
-get a live rat fuzzy and place in the cage in front of the hide the snake is using at around 8:00 pm. (you might want to thump it on the head to stun it so that it does'nt crawl on top of your snake before its ready to eat, but make sure its moving some).
-leave alone in a dark, vibration free room (or cover enclosure with a towel) overnight without bothering (maybe give a quick peek before going to bed with a small flashlight).
I would be surprised if this did'nt work. If it does'nt there may be something else going on with your BRB and a vet visit may be in order but try this for a couple feeding attempts first.
Hope this helps,
Paul

paulbuck,
thanks for sum feedback. ok my cage is aprox. 28 inches (across) x 12 inches (deep) x 12 inches tall. on the left side closest to the front of the cage is a UTH. i use "Jungle Mix" brand substrate. directly on top of the heating pad is a 6 inch diameter, 3 inch tall circular plastic tub with spagnum moss that is kept near drenched at all times.(this was the tub he was kept in at the pet store before i purchased him.) ocupying the non heating pad side behind that is a "bark" that he hides under (dont worry i got it from a pet store and its sterile). moving right...there is a tupperwear water dish that takes up the back right 1/4 of the cage. and in front of that is more bark. so the cage has a "moss retreat" and a huge water dish and the rest is covered with bark peices to hide under. also i have a cardboard wall that i use to block off about 5-6 of the cage that he doesnt need.(initially this was done to keep the temps up). stuck onto the (hot side) plastic tub is a thermamdor that registeres 80 at the highest 75 at the lowest. on the opososite side of the cage is a thermomador stuck to the top near the screen that registeres 70 about all the time. i have a cardboard insulator backing and a cardboard cut out that covers the screen to keep it humid.

i am begining to think the snake never got properly adjusted to his new cage, and the force feeding has kept him to stressed to eat. all this compounding to what i have now- a brb that shed 2 times eating 4 times (forced) and me being very confused.

i will try your idea. do u think it would be wise to keep him in the spagnum moss reatreat with some ceran wrap to keep him in, that way i can utilize the cages UTH?

igywigie,
....Your snake is telling you something. He stays in hiding under the bark away from the heater. If the top of a 3 inch tall plastic tub has a thermometer that reads 75 to 80 then it must be hotter than that inside and on the bottom of the tub or on the floor of the cage over the heater. If a thermometer at the top of the cool end of the cage always reads 70 then the floor of the cage where the snake spends most of it's time is higher than 70. You have had problems with this BRB because you were trying to keep it too hot. These are not snakes that require much heat like many other boids do. If you had a room temperature that stayed in the low to mid 70s a little BRB would do fine in a cage with no heater at all. Do not try to trap the snake in the humid tub with plastic wrap. Let the snake go where it wants in the cage and pay attention to what it is telling you with it's behaviour.
Jeff

igywigie Feb 22, 2005 08:38 PM
