An under tank heating pad is much better than a heat light. Hook it up to a thermostat to regulate the temps and you're good. A single digital thermometer will work. I keep the probe on the warm side, and once every few days use it to check the cool side. A better idea is to keep the digital thermometer on the warm side, and use a temp gun to instantly check other temps all around the cage.

Oh. And the digital thermometer should have a min/max option. That way you'll know the complete temperature range (highs and lows) throughout the day. I picked mine up at Home Depot for about $5.
