White sided greeenish rats

Kevin Saunders Feb 22, 2005 07:15 PM

I was just thinking, black rats and yellows intergrade naturally and both forms can express licorice traits which I assume are genetically compatible with each other. Has anyone ever made a white sideded greenish rat? If so, I definately missed out on it. It doesn't seem to me like it would be glaringly different from the other licorice forms, but it could turn out different. Anyway, if anyone has seen or heard of these, let me know please.

Interesting idea, I know a friend of mine bred a WS Everglades to a WS Black Rat and all offspring were WS. If you bred either to a Greenish I bet after it was het-ed out it would make the same look. Probably be cool looking too. I'd love to see a Motley White Sided anything. Tom Stevens

I thought it'd be cool to have a licorice rat with a greenish hue, but I didn't know what that mix would look like. All the ghost glades I've seen had pretty yellow backs with black rats ranging from brown to black. I'd really like to see a whitesided corn.

I know there have been black rat/corn crosses, so I toyed with the idea of trying to breed my licorice black rat to a corn then breeding offspring together to get white sideds. That's a little too much work for a small time hobbyist like me though. It was really intriguing though because I have a female anery motley het amel and my licorice is possible het albino. So you by breeding offspring together, I could potentially produce aneries, motleys, albinos/amels, white sideds, and combinations of those morphs. It's fun to imagine, but unless someone else does it I'm not likely to see what would actually result.

The amelanistic allele from the black rat is probably different than the amelanistic allele in the corn.
Don Soderberg tried to breed an amelanistic Great Plains Ratsnake (Emoryi) to an amelanistic Cornsnake (gutatta) and the resulting offspring were all normal looking with melanism.
But yes, a whitesided Green Ratsnake would be awesome. It would look Pied almost with the contrasting white and green. Cool idea

I'm with you completely, Kevin, I too would love to see a white-sided corn. However, I'm not even a small breeder, just a hobbyist with 3 pet snakes and a hubby who threatens to disown me or worse if I even look at another snake, so there's no way I'd even be able to attempt such a project. For me, the thought of a white snake with a red back ( and a motley back would be really cool!) sends shivers down MY back LOL. Mike Joliff had mentioned such a project last year, but I haven't seen anything about it lately - are you out there, Mike? In the meantime, I'll just keep my fingers crossed and keep working on hubby!

I bred a WS everglades to a albino sunglow corn and also a WS blackrat to an albino sunglow corn. Both of these double hets are raised up and ready to breed this season.

I am SO excited to read about this projct! PLEASE keep us posted with any news (and pictures!) - I can hardly wait to see what you get. Watch out, hubby - I foresee another snake in the house one of these days!
