Kingsnake Feeding Problems, Won't Eat Mice, HELP.

HerperHelmz Feb 22, 2005 07:46 PM

Hello all,

I'm having a little feeding problem with my 04 female eastern kingsnake. I bought an eastern king from David Johnson from Radioactivereptiles, the snake I bought was an 04 female feeding on unscented pinks. Well, my money order got lost in the mail for over 10 days, we agreed on a last day to wait, and he sold the snake. He got my money order 2 days later. He gave me the options, of either him sending me a eastern king that only eats snakes, or he could send the money order back. I chose to have the snake.

Well, at first, I didn't think of this as a problem, as many people on here know I will readily feed a snake to a snake. But, I simply DO NOT want the king feeding on snakes, she will grow slower on a diet of snakes, and I simply will not be able to provide larger snakes for when she gets bigger.

Can anyone recommend some tips or anything I can try to get her to feed on pinkies? So far, she has refused brained pinkies, pinkies wrapped in snake skin(tried 5 times, with 5 different species of snake's skin) and a mix of both of those. Someone suggested to me that I do not feed her for a few weeks, and hope that she will take some scented pinkies because she is hungry.

I am open to any ideas...

Mike

I've had good luck using a Deli cup. Put the snake and a live pinky in a small deli cup and wait, overnight if necessary. Worked well for my Mex Mex and now she's a pig for f/t. Bill

That if I had access to live pinkies then I could easily get her to take a live pinky, like most snakes, she is enticed by movement. But, pet stores and such freeze the mice as soon as they are born.

Try a brained pinkie and put it under an upside down nontranslucent bowl. Put the snake in with it. Check it in about 15 minutes to see if it ate or not.
If this doesn't work I got lots more tricks.
You can email me at jlassiterjr54@grandecom.net
Hope this helps,

my 04 snow brooks took a lizard scented pink today before that he thought they were mini heaters meant for snuggling. But it took lots of lizards and geckos to get to this point. as he would ONLY eat lizards . my advice is let the king get hungry (and spring time has arrived)then try a scented pink(Live)and remember certain times of the shed cycle are unnoticable.
ihad a small eastern eat a crawler fuzzy so it fed another all it did was FREAK out the snake by touching and crawling in the scambling mayhem the snake regurged and hasnt eatten a fuzzy since (2 weeks ago) Chris
