New Born Cresteds - Need Some Advice

Tasiamay Feb 22, 2005 10:16 PM

My pair of Cresties recently had two babies. The pair is in a naturalistic setup (eating only CGD), so unfortunately I did not see the babies being born. In fact, I did not even see the eggs (even though I do a weekly check of the substrate). Needless to say, I am not sure how old they are. They are now in a seperate enclosure (a small critter keeper with no substrate & a plant to hide in), and have been for the past two nights.

I know that baby cresties normally do not eat their first meal until after their first shed. Since I do not know how old they are, I am unsure if they have shed yet (although I do see several "skins" in the adult setup).

I have tried very tiny crickets and CGD - both of which they have been uninterested in. I bought some baby food and am going to try that tonight. When do I begin to worry about them not eating? Is there another food source to try? Any other helpful hints about raising Cresties would be helpful as well.

Here is a picture of the adult setup ...

Congrats on hatching them in a naturalistic setup. I've never done it, but I think it would be neat to try.

Baby Cresteds shed very soon after hatching...usually within a few hours, but a day or two at the most.

As for the food, don't worry...they'll eat just fine. I have 2-3 month old geckos that I've never seen eat...but the little gecko turds I find tell me they have.

The link below goes to my FAQ section...take a look at that for a better explanation of baby crested eating habits and why you probably won't notice themm eating.

Thanks for the link to your fact page ... very informative! It was very neat to walk by the cage in the morning and find two little babies just chillin' on the plant leaves!!

I will continue with the baby food and CGD, and try some crickets again in a couple of weeks. Thanks Again!!

Try peach baby food, You can see if he has shed or not by if he has trouble climbing up things. I won't start to worry for a couple more days yet. good luck

i always thought it would be cool to just walk in and find some little ones climbing the walls. good luck with them and i'm sure they'll eat just fine.
