PLEASE HELP! FIRST IGGY! NOT NORMAL!

angelic_eyes Feb 22, 2005 10:47 PM

Okay ill take him to the vet, but it will have to wait till monday cause I dont get a paycheck till saturday!.. But any ideas on what it could be? for you who didnt read the first post.. I bought an iguana today my first one. ( I normally keep snakes and monitors), anyways I wasnt thinking, and he was the only calm one who would just sit in my hand so I got him! Once I got home I thought about it more. He hasnt moved around in the 6 hours hes been in his new enclosure. I dont want to take him back to the petstore, i allready bonded with him, plus the others were really mean and crazy. I want him to be okay! But back to the point, anyone know what it could be? He looks fine! perfect! just wont move, but when i hold him he moves his arms and legs a bit.. so i dont think they hurt, plus i would think if there were something wrong with his arms/legs, hed maybe try to bite me when i pick him up so i dont hurt him? i dont know please help! ID FEEL HORRIBE IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO HIM?

He is probably really stressed so you want to just let him settle in for around 3-4 days (he has just changed worlds) only hold him if he is drowning himself (this is very unlikely) or other live or die situations.

Actually, I'm not so sure if it could be stress. He could be very malnurished. True that you should let him get settled in before holding him, but I've never heard of a juvenile iguana (especially a juvenile iguana) not moving at all when it comes home. I remember the day I brought Sir Iggy home. He couldn't wait to get out of the box he was in, and as soon as he was out, he ran circles around the room until I caught him and put him in his new cage. I've even brought a few iguanas home with me until I could find them appropriate homes, and even the sick ones moved around quite a bit. I know with most pet stores, the animals don't really receive individual attention, if any, so I would still take him to the vet. It could be a number of things. If he hasn't moved in 6 hours to at least explore his new surroundings, that's a definite red flag to me.

i replied to your post below before i read this one. i hope your iguana is ok. but if he does not make it then it is not your fault. most pet stores are horrible with the iguanas. make sure the basking spot is high enough. and he has fresh food and watter at all times. and try to get him to the vet as soon as possible. good luck. -brandy

This definatly would not be your fault. When i brought my iggy home he was very curious and checked out everything in his new HUGE encloser...loved it and moved from place to place. make sure you have a warm basking spot UVB lighting and all that.. UVB is very important so make sure he has that. well good luck and just try not to stress your lil guy out a whole bunch.. dont blame this on yourself though. it isnt your fault you are just trying to help. hang in there. dont get all worked up and upset when this could be something really minor and nothing to worry about.. okay. it'll all be okay.
