Sinaloan refusing food, greenish urates, questions

nategodin Jul 07, 2003 07:12 PM

Hello,
For a couple months, my adult female Sinaloan has been generally restless, and refuses food most of the time. She still eats about once a month, and drinks water regularly. At first I thought the increase in activity was due to warmer weather, but she has continued to cruise around constantly, day and night, and has rubbed the tip of her nose slightly raw. She doesn't use her hides anymore either, just lays on top of her bark substrate in the open when she's not moving. There have been no significant changes in husbandry since I got her last August, she's lived in her 20L aquarium with bark substrate for almost a year with no problems. Her temperature gradient ranges from mid 70s on the cool side, mid 80s on the warm side, with supplemental heat provided as needed by an under-tank pad. I've tried both increasing and decreasing the temperature, with no apparent effect on her behavior. She passes waste which is mostly whitish urates with small amounts of black/brown feces. The urates sometimes have a green/yellow tinge to them, which I've read can be a sign of intestinal infection. I plan on taking a sample to the vet to check tomorrow. However, the small amounts of feces she passes are solid and don't have a strong smell, and the greenish stuff looks more like a bit of musk mixed in with the urates than anything. Does anyone know what could cause a snake to behave like this, and is a small amount of musk/greenish color unusual to find in her urates?

Thanks,
Nate

Green fecal matter is not usually a good sign. It could well be one of a number of things, including Giardia, Coccidia, and Entamoeba as well as a number of other protozoans or nematodes. Or, it could be nothing more than the fact that she hasn't eaten for a while. The best way to find out for sure is with a fecal exam.

Are you sure she isn't gravid and looking for a place to nest? They will go off food for an extended period when they are gravid. Sinaloans are laying right now.

Sounds like it could be any number of things... I'll keep you posted on the fecal results.

It's extremely unlikely that she's gravid... I only own one male snake, an '02 black milk, and even if he were mature, I've never had them together. The woman I bought her from had never bred her, or put her in contact with any male snakes to my knowledge. Could she be full of infertile eggs? I can't feel any, and she's actually lost a bit of weight, so it seems highly unlikely.

The vet didn't find anything unusual in Columbia's feces. I'll be taking her in Thursday for an exam... wish me luck. :P

Good luck!
Let us know what the vet says.
