Buying my first Boa - what do I need to ask the breeder?

avivayael Feb 23, 2005 11:52 AM

I found a breeder with a Tarahumara Boa - which is what I’m interested in b/c they are the smallest boas. Since I haven’t done this before, I was wondering if anyone has any advice to give me regarding important questions to ask the breeder before purchase.

Info I already have:
Got a pic
It’s a boy!
Breeder says he’s eating pre-killed with no problem
Breeder says he’s healthy
He was born in 2004 - I have requested birth date
He is 15 inches approx.

What else should I be asking about?

Thanks in advance.

You may want to verify that both parents are in fact Tara Mt. boas. The reason I say this is because it could get a little bigger than you are expecting if it is some sort of cross. As long as the breeder is reputable, then I would probably trust his/her word for it.
Thats a very nice looking boa by the way!
Best of luck,
Eric

Thanks Eric! He has the lineage on his website. A researcher brought back a pair from Mexico and he got a pair of their second litter. This is thier offspring. Of course I'm taking his word for it - but that's probably all I could do anyway.

Here's an interesting question though... How does it work with sibling pair offsrping in the reptile world? Anyone know?

Maybe what his present housing conditions and feeding schedules are like,
any personal recommendations,
the number to or how to find a good vet for them,
any specific care sheets, related books or videos you can research,
ideal breeding set-up/conditions (for the future, obviously)
and maybe more about them,
how long they have been in business, references, and guarantees.

I can only think of maybe 3 specific people who would have these true animals, and they are all great guys with great animals.

Best Wishes!
