New to this, feeding/behavior questions

postmaster Feb 23, 2005 01:05 PM

I got the most beautiful baby leo ever, but I do have some questions. At the store where i bought "Clifford" my leo they only fed them crickets and now he doesnt seem intrested in mealies. However i am a college student and meal worms are much easier for me to aquire and keep for my leo is there any way for me to train my leo to eat mealies, or if i just simply stop giving him crickets will he just get hungry enough to eat the mealies?
Also I heard you cant feed your leo too much so i have been feeding my baby leo 2 reg crickets a day, wich he seems to love and i poweder them with vitamin powder from the store. does this seem fine? Clifford seems to never move around the cage unless he is chasing a cricket then he goes back and sleeps or lounges all day and night, i heard if i feed him less often he will become more lively is there any truth to this statement? I like my gecko alot and i want him to be around for a long time, Thanks tons

Congrats on your new leo! You can and should feed babies ALL they want to eat. (you got her at PetsMart, didn't you... pet stores are notorious for their bad care info, it makes me crazy). Most leos will eventually accept mealworms but I don't recommend the "they can eat the mealie or starve" technique on a baby, because it doesn't take long for a baby to get underfed to the point that it's dangerous healthwise. Try offering her a freshly molted mealworm (it is white) sometimes they like those more. Also try gutloading the mealies on different things before offering them to her. I find that mealies who just ate carrots seem to really taste good to leos.

oops, Sorry about calling Clifford a she, lol. And that sounds like normal behaviour. They are the most active in the evenings and nighttime in my experience. again, DO NOT feed him less often!!!! That statement must be aimed at full-grown overfed/obese leos, certainly NOT baby growing leos. Feed him as much as he wants.
