RETF egg care

Hacker Feb 23, 2005 03:39 PM

My first clutch stayed attached to the glass and there were no problems, but the last 3 have slid down and I am unsure of the best method of keeping them. First I tryed putting a tray under the egg mass and then they slid into that, but I had a very very low success rate with that. The last time the eggs slid into the water so I scooped them out and they seemed fine the tads inside wiggling, so I put a few in water (separate container) to see if they would live. After a day the rest of the mass slid into the water and the eggs that I put into the water were still alive so I put the rest into water. A day later all dead. If any one could tell me what they do I would greatly appreciate it. Next I was thinking about putting the mass on a small platform in a rubbermaid with water and the lid on for humidity. What do you guys think. I don't feel like loosing another 200 eggs. Thanks very much for your time.

Hey,
If you think about the fact they lay their eggs on a leaf above water and when the tadpoles actually hatch they slide into the water then maybe making an elevated flat surface and putting the egg clutch on top might not be a bad idea. I would suggest you leave them where they are if you can, you don't want to move them too much. Doing it this way should provide a good "sliding" surface for them to wriggle into the water provided you keep it nice and humid and wet (so not to dry them out). GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!
