Can anyone tell me where to find good care sheets on geckos and info on the diff types. I'm considering a gecko for my daughter and wondered which type of gecko is "popular", good for beginers and how to house them. We have two beardies but I hear geckos are kept much differently.

TIA

Hello. Some good "beginner" geckos which are hardy, relatively easy to care for and also handleable (your daughter probably would want to hold her gecko sometimes) are: leopard geckos, crested geckos, gargoyle geckos, and fat-tail geckos. Each one has different care requirements. I don't have links handy of care sheets or info on them, but maybe someone else will.

Personally I'd stick with the leopard geckos. I have two and I love them to death. They both love to be handled. I wouldn't suggest a fat tail gecko because I've heard that they aren't captive bred and when they're caught in the wild they have parasites and tend to die off faster than leopard geckos. I'd show you pics of my two but I'm not sure exactly how to post them so when I find this out I'll post pics of my babies. I have an albino and what is either a pastel or a snow I'm not sure.

leaftail Feb 23, 2005 05:31 PM

Just fyi, there are plenty of captive bred fat-tails around. I hear they make great pets, too.

leoman89 Feb 23, 2005 05:50 PM

yeah its true they breed them at VMS herps.

Nicoleo Feb 23, 2005 06:26 PM

Thats just what I was told when I was looking for my gecko I never said that there weren't any captive bred fat tail geckos. If I had known how many different kinds of leopard gecko's there are I wouldn't have settled for an albino. I would have gone with something more colorful but my albino was my first reptile. I still don't know everything there is to know about reptiles and I probably never will but I try to help with what I do know since I didn't get the best responses when I first posted on here.

Yes I read some of that thread. Sorry people were rude to you there . I wasnt trying to disagree with you or anything, just wanted to make sure joijoi (the thread poster) knew that cb fat tails were available.

leoman89 Feb 23, 2005 08:17 PM

Nicoleo i know you didnt get the best responses when you first posted here but i was one of the people sticking up for you. and i still cant believe some of the posts they were so rude and mean.

Nicoleo Feb 23, 2005 09:58 PM

I wasn't trying to be rude or anything when I said that about the fat tails. I just didn't know that some are bred in captivity. I was told to get a leopard gecko for their long lives and the fact that person I was discussing them with had never seen one die in all his years dealing with reptiles. I do appreciate the people that stuck up for me because some people out there are very rude. I'll admit that I need help because I'm new to owning reptiles and I'm not afraid to admit that I can't do it on my own but with any animal there are exceptions to every rule and people need to realize that.

I don't know that I completely agree with gargoyles being handlable. They tend to be a little bit jumpy if awake, otherwise they don't move much. I think they look cooler, but if you're looking for something really interesting and active you have to go leopard.

Leopard Gecko Care Sheet

LeoGeoGuy Feb 23, 2005 05:46 PM

I'd seriously go with either a leopard gecko or crested gecko. Leos average is 8-9 inches and cresteds are 6-8. do a search on google for care sheets on crested geckos, and for the leos, look at the top of the page where the sponsers links are. They have some nice care sheets.

kendergirl Feb 23, 2005 05:47 PM

Leopard geckos are great for beginning herpers...and considering you have beardies, you shouldn't have a problem. I've never had a bearded dragon, but I don't think the care is too much different. Leopards are great because they can be very tame with a little work and stay relatively small (but they are big for geckos).

A good place to find out pretty much everything you might need to know is http://www.drgecko.com/ Do a search on leopard gecko care, and there is NO shortage on sites offering info.

I don't really know where to find any info on other geckos, sorry.

primebizzel28 Feb 23, 2005 07:54 PM

ive herd AFT are more tame then LEO's
both are relitevly EZ to care for
search googlle for care sheets
and read more then one for each
Hope this all helped.

yeah i actually heard the same thing while reading up on them. they are supposed to be more docile.

leaftail Feb 23, 2005 08:25 PM

Yes I read the same thing but it still varies from gecko to gecko. The worst bite I ever got from a gecko was from a male striped fat tail, and he did it out of pure meanness. So you really need to find out if the specific gecko you are thinking of buying has a nice personality. Either hold it, or if it's being shipped, ask the breeder.

Leos are absolutely a walk in the park after dealing with beardies. Cooler temps, less food, drink standing water, ect. I find all of my leos combined (11 and counting) eat the same amount as my two dragons in a given week.

If you're looking at leos... check out my caresheet. I cover most of the basics. (Adobe Acrobat PDF file)

thanks for all the help and info! I was shocked to see all the responses tonight when I didn't get one on the other forum! Beardies are my love but two is enough and the amount of crix and food will almost keep you poor! lol! There is a show coming the beginning of April and we will definately educate ourselves before bringing one home. Thanks again for your help!
