Inglebert still needs help

inglebert Feb 23, 2005 04:55 PM

Me again. My CWD is still not eating. It's been weeks. I have been mixing a teaspoon of plain yogurt with 1 drop of Avitron and smearing it on his mouth (obviously only a very tiny bit). I have only seen him open his mouth and try it once, otherwise he has it stuck n his face. I have added a few drops to his pool in the hopes he is drinking out of it, and we spray him once a day with an external vitamin/ electrlyte spray. I put him in the direst sun like every other day for a 5-15 minutes (he likes that, even holds his head up). He does move around his cage between the heat and the pool, but not active at all. I have not dewormed him as there is nothing available in this town. Am going to check out a petsco this weekend and see if they have anything for him. Am I doing the right thing?

If it were mine, I'd use chicken baby food and and let him lick it off the end of my finger. You can also use a syringe to feed mashed insects, chicken food and pedialyte. Cut the syringe tip so that it is bevelled and gently use the bevelled edge to open his mouth. Give him small amounts, allow him to swallow and then give more. I only give 1-5 cc twice daily. If you feel that he needs to be wormed and do not have access to a vet you can worm him using Panacur dog dewormer. Dosages are avalable on the web at www.icomm.ca/dragon/parasite.htm or at www.anapsid.org Worm medicine will also cause a loss in appetite. I wouldn't attempt the deworming until this little one is feeling better. Good luck!

The baby foods a good idea mix with a little yogurt, the yogurt is important for establishing a healthy micro flora. Don't for get the metrondiazole to mix with the panacure, also available online.

Rick, where do you get Flagyl on the web without a script? I was lucky-mine didn't have flagyllates but I'd like to keep some on hand here just in case I get stupid and bring home another one! Can you get Baytril also? I ordered both from 1800petmeds and they wouldn't ship anything I ordered except that which was non-prescription.

Metrondiazole is sold as fish medication for treating hole-in the head disease. A common disease of large ciclids like oscars. The brand name flagyl is a human grade form and probably a higher quality medication. you will probably have a hard time finding Baytril (enrofloxacin)without a prescription. Before 9/11 it was easier to order prescription drugs out of Mexico. Try doing a search on live stock medication, sometimes its easier to find antibiotics and such for them

Thanks, Rick. I didn't know about the fish disease. I know I can use Cipro, human equivalent of Baytril, but it is really bitter when crushed. But I guess it's better than having a dragon die because I can't get the meds.

Wait a minute, I read all your post from the last thread and this one, what lighting do you have for him in his tank? I would DEFINATELY recommend the deworming like Rick said. Mine acted exactly like yours for nearly a month then I got him dewormed and he perked right up. Make sure his tank lighting has the sufficient UVB.

We have 2 "sunglow" 25W bulbs going 8 hours a day. We have bottom heat pad all the time. We sray him with a vitamin, electrolyte spray and add avitron to his pool every day. I went to find metrondiazole today at a Petsco, but no luck. They did not offer anything for deworning so again I am out of luck. We live in northern Wisconsin and this is not prime area for maintaining a CWD. I guess my next step is to order something online, can you PLEASE give me advice on what to order.. We are trying to get him to eat chicken baby food with yogurt and a drop of avitron, he hates me. What a strong little guy he is. Any advice is appreciated.

I may have missed previous threads that discussed this situation but it seems strange to me no one has recomened you take your CWD to the vet. Has he already been?

I would definately try deworming as sometimes even if they dont have a lot of worms dewormer can help stimulate the appetite. (or so says my vet)

Also, you said you had a 25watt bulb and a heat pad, do you have a basking spot as well? 25watts isnt putting out much, if any, heat, and the UTH is good for belly heat but they still need a basking spot. If he doesn't have one, this might be a reason he isnt eating...

If I remember correctly he started off taking him to a vet that said he looked fine, definetly no point in going back there.

Here is where we stand now. Inglebert seems to be getting stronger. We have fed him 1-2cc of Repta-aid for 4 days. Anything in his belly is better then nothing. My daughter is able to coax his mouth open gently and we are able feed him relatively calmly. We continue to add vitamins to his pool and spray him with the vitamin sprayonce a day. We do not have a basking light, but put him in direct sunlight every other day for 5-15 min. He seems strong, and has had 1 eye open on occassion.
We are getting him some Jump start this weekend, read that this had protein and fat in it, hope that will fill his meat eater needs. I am trying to get ahold of a vet that was recommended to me to ask about deworming. I am having trouble with that. No one seems to have metronadiole and I went to the sites you suggested Rick and had no luck. Perhaps I am looking for the wrong thing. Please advise. So far so good anyway. Thanks all for your help, but not out of the woods yet.

When You go to your vet ask for Panacure and Flagyl, these are the brand names that they will be familiar with. Good luck and keep us informed to his progress. You mentioned that you didn't have a basking light. I would say that is the most important, not for UVB but for thermal regulation, if he can't get warm enough he won't eat. Although they can tolerate ambient temperatures as low as 70, they should have a basking site where the warmest temperatures exceed 90.
