Hyla Cinerea Behavior Question.

RZHerpKeeper Feb 23, 2005 05:26 PM

I bought 2 of them from a pet store about a month ago but I'm perplexed about their behavior. At first my green male was smaller than the olive colored one so I figured that it was a she. The green male croaks very often while the other never croaks. I've seen the green male eat but as for the olive one I'm not sure if it has.

What I don't understand is that when I first bought them the green male was smaller than the olive one but now the green male has gone through a growth spurt and is much larger. Is it possible that I have 2 males and the olive male is too intimadated to croak or eat? I thought females were supposed to be larger than males or do I have my species mixed up?

I was hoping that this forum had more experienced and knowledgable people.

There's no use to get upset because some people are not as knowlegable with latin names as others. There's ALOT to put to memory. If you did want you question answered, it might have been helpful to others to include the common name in the Subject, instead of backing with a kind of rude comment. I will answer your question:

male--has a slimmer, dirty, loose throat.

female--chunkier, clean throat sometimes almost pearly white, pretty tight can be kinda loose but now where as wrinkly as the male's.

If you have juveniles it will be much harder to tell. You might be able to look for nuptual pads on this species, but that will only be in the breeding season(and probably with a magnifying glass).
GL to you, if you have anymore questions---do ask

I only said what I said because it looked like nobody here truly knew what I was talking about. As an owner I always learn the scientific names of my animals to help me look up information. I figured if somebody had at least a clue they would have asked me what kind of frogs they were or entered it in an internet search.

Thanks for the reply and now I'm almost sure I have a male and a female. But, do males grow faster than females because the male was smaller than the female but now it's totally opposite??? In fact it looked like the female got smaller. That's why I've been so confused. It also looked like the female may have been staving herself but now that I've moved them into a better tank everything looks better. The male most definetely eats often and the crickets are gutloaded with calcium and dusted with vitamins so could that may be why he grows so fast?

Hey,
I think you said that the "smaller" one wasn't eating as well, this can definitely stunt growth. There is normally a medical reason behind this , esp. if your husbandry checks out. Disease and illness can make them grow slower, just as it can in us humans. So if for some reason you smaller froggie is or was sick that could be the answer. Try and find a willing exotic vet and have her a check up(just in case). If she's doing better and eating more now, thats a good thing, but I would still err on tha side of caution and see a vet (don't wanna make you other froggie sick too).
Good Luck!

She's been doing great since replacing them in the more humid bigger tank. She no longer looks skinny and has become more active. Maybe she wasn't able to cope with the drier tank unlike the male who was always active. Hopefully she'll catch up with the male and start to look bigger like a female should.
