tiger salamanders

ryanh22 Feb 24, 2005 04:02 AM

hi.......i have a question, it may sound rather stupid, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I have two tiger salamanders and a fairly large spotted salamander. I am going to transport them all to a 75 gallon vivarium...(live moss, plants, etc.) my question is...I was thinking about purchasing a fire salamander. I didnt know if the skin secretions from these guys could harm the ambystomatids. I've never heard of anyone keeping the two different species/families together. the tigers arent big enough to hastle the spotted...nor would they be big enough to bother a fire salamander. Would this be safe to do so - keeping the fire salamander with the other two species? Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated....I dont want anything to happen to my guys! thanks a bunch

I personally would not do it, the tigers and spotteds may bight him and that could be really bad for them. I read in a book about salamanders and newts not to mix species, the author said kept toads in a bucket and even after release the toads skin secreations remained in the water and killed the other amphibians he put in there. Cannot remember the author's name but it was one of thouse Barrons pet care books...great read.
