My gecko likes to bite people, or socks for that matter!!!!

briank Feb 24, 2005 06:37 AM

I got this new leo gecko, got her when she was about 3 weeks old, and now shes about 50 days old or so. Whenever I go to pet her or anything, she'll try and bite me, and she has a few times, but it doesnt hurt (atleast not now until she gets bigger).

If i want to hold the baby, i have to use a sock or something! There are plenty of crickets in the cage, and plenty of water while i am trying to pet her. Are all babies like this or what? I have had two other leo geckos for 10 years, and they are the nicest guys/girls ive ever had, but this new baby is pissing me off haha.

any ideas on how to get her to stop biting my finger, or sock in this case? lol

I've heard that babies are not really that nice. I got my leo as a full grown and she's real nice.

Is there a chance you are scaring the baby when you go into "her" cage to get "her"?

My suggestion is this (I use the same technique with my brothers bearded who is a little mean): Slowly open the cage (if its a screen lid top, just lift it straight up and move it a bit to access the cage, make sure it doesn't make any noise), slowly put your hand in there a little ways away from the leo, then put a treat on it like a wax worm. ALL leo's LOVE wax worms.

Maybe if the little "gal" figures out this equation: your hand in the cage a treat no biting= good, everything will be fine.

I wish you luck!

Hi, I'm new to this forum. I also have leopard geckos. It's my understanding that when leopard geckos are young they are a lot more agressive and will bite if bugged. When it gets older it should mellow down. I suggest leaving it alone unless you need absoluetly need to pick it up like cleaning its tank. When you do pick it up try placing one hand in front of it and then shepherd it onto your hand with the other.
