bloodroses19 Feb 24, 2005 01:29 PM

ok draco had his absys removed. now there is a big gapping open wound on his bottom jaw. the doc says to clean it out twice a day with peroxide. this sounds very painful. i have to stick a q-tip up into his cut and clean it. i diddnt think peroxide was suposed to be used on cuts that bad. please give me some advice. wouldnt bentadine be better for him? -brandy

I would be iffy about using peroxide, too. But if you like and trust your vet, you should follow the vet's advice. If you question it, it wouldn't hurt to ask for a second opinion and maybe ultimately switch vets. No good having a vet who's advice you question

this is the first time i brought any of my animals to this vet. i used to go to this other guy but he diddnt know what he was doing and i diddnt trust him. and these two are the only reptile vets around here so they are my only choices. he seemd to be alot better then the vet i used to go to. and even the vet techs there seemed to know alot about iguanas. the bottle says ask a doctor before use if you have deep or puncture wounds, animal bitrs or seriouse burns. which makes me think you really shouldnt use it on a wound such as his. not sure what to do. thanks for your reply. -brandy

I'd get a second opinion on the peroxide. All of the herp vets that I've had experience with specifically say not to use peroxide and to use dilute Betadine or, better yet, dilute Nolvasan. They all also recommend using Silvadene cream on wounds. We use the Nolvasan and Silvadene here with great results.

my vet uses nolvasan solution diluted about 1:4 with water in flushing herp abscesses daily until they heal from the inside--it's important it doesn't just crust over. A curved-tip 5cc syringe works well to get the stuff into the wound (it's a plastic syringe, don't worry, no needle), though a regular luer-tip syringe works just fine too. Nolvasan is commonly used for disinfecting surgery sites, so perhaps you could ask your vet for some solution or find it somewhere else?
