Feeding question

ptdnsr Feb 24, 2005 07:53 PM

Ok, this past weekend at the local herp show we purchased a Columbian Red Tail (yes, I know that's not a true red-tail). We learned from the breeder that she was being fed f/t hoppers and was last fed on 2/14. We tried to feed her before (got her on 2/20) but she wouldn't eat. Ate 4 f/t fuzzies tonight and seems like she wants more. My question is how much and how often is it advised to feed a female baby Columbian that currently weighs in at 107 grams and is around 2' long. We want to keep her well fed but don't want her to become obese. We would probably figure it out over time but hearing from everyone here who has experience would be better for her. Thanks so much!

Be VERY careful on how much you feed your boa. To much & your boa will regurge (throw up) This is hard of young boas. You said the boas was 2ft. I'd look at her girth and try 1 rat, preferable frozen thawed or freshed killed & feed your boa a rat thats simular to it's girth or just a tad bit larger than it's girth..... but not much bigger. Hope this helps.

Boas are not cornsnakes and should be fed less often. I would not feed 4 prey items at one time. I think 1 appropriate size meal every 7 to 10 days is all she needs. Once your boa hits about 3 feet, once every 10 to 14 days is good.
Good luck with your new boa and post some pics of her when you can.

All I can say is dang you guys are fast. The only reason we went with fuzzies is because she was on hoppers (which is the size we actually don't have) and we weren't sure how much she would want seeing as how she's only been with us a few days. Figured a smaller meal might be easier and she could choose how much she wanted to eat. I'll look at her girth and see, she'll probably be able to handle an adult mouse so we'll try that next time. Thanks so much!

P.S. - The first pics I can get of her staying still enough for my digital to catch it I will - haven't had much luck so far.
