Do crocodiles build nests and alligators dig holes to lay their eggs in??
What about gharials and caimans?
Alligators build large mound-type nests over the course of a few weeks out of plants and other organic material she scrapes up into a pile. She also kicks back a good amount of soil which gets mixed in with the plants. Then for the week prior to laying, she will repeatedly excavate the cavity she will ultimately deposit her eggs in. In my opinion this is to get the actual area soft and workable and well mixed for proper incubation temps. I have never seen crocodiles nest, but from everything I heard most species deposit in sand bars or sand banks. I have no clue about Gharials. From what I understand caimans nests are very similar to american alligators.

It isn't "Ideas" that fail or succeed,... it is the "Systems" which are instilled to launch and sustain the idea that either fail or succeed.>[Me.]
Got a little confused....
Your saying that crocodiles dig a hole and lay underground?

Consult the species list at www.crocodilian.com. Adam has included information about nest types in the breeding section under each animal. Example, Alligators, Philippine croc, Morlets croc and Saltwater croc are all mound nesters while Nile crocs, Orinoco crocs and American crocs are all hole nesters.

I did some researching and have found that alligators build nests and that the Nile crocodile builds holes. The saltwater crocodile builds nests.
I guess whether they dig holes or a nest depends on the species of crocodilian
