Field Research

goini04 Feb 24, 2005 09:42 PM

Hello everyone,

Usually I study my animals in captivity. This year I think I am going to start studying some wild specimens in their natural habitat. I am just wondering what forms do the experienced field researchers in here use? What information do you add in the forms?
Does anyone have a "template" that first timers can use? Also besides possibly a snake hook and some tongs, are there any other tools/supplies that I should take? Any information for a first timer would be great. Also if anyone happens to know of a good website as a reference for me, that would be awesome.

Thanks in advance,

Stan

I guess it depends on exactly what data you plan on recording. Do you intend to record just presence data (what you found and where) or are you going to take measurements, weights, body temperatures, sexes?

Are you going to mark animals so that you can recognize recaptures?

Where are you located? That can have a big influence on the types of data that are relevant.

Just some food for thought.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the response. I am located in Ohio. I don't plan on marking for recapture or anything, but now that you mention it, weight, length, sex, habitat, temps/hum, etc. would all be good to take record of. As I stated I am new to this, so I am just wondering what information would be a good idea to record and so forth. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
