Need some input...

WK Feb 24, 2005 10:50 PM

I have to print an image for my kid’s school mollusk project. Not much mollusk around this time of year, but I found this small land snail by turning some landscaping timber in the yard. Which of these do you think would make the best 8x10 print? Thanks for any input.

Cheers
WK

This one I will print 4x6 just to show the size of the snail. Taken with a Nikon Coolpix 800 (10 yrs old!) in “macro” mode.

Nikon D70, Sigma 180mm EX lens, f/18, 1/200 second, SB800 off camera & hand held

Same camera, lens, settings as above

Nikon D70, Sigma 105mm Ex lens, f/16, 1/160 second, SB800 off camera & hand held

I like the second one, when the snail is on the rock. It shows the whole snail in focus, but the first thing that catches your eye is the long body. Also, there is no distractions as there are in the first one. The second would be a great photo for the project!!!

Thanks for your comments. I'm leaning towards #2, too. In the bottom two, one of the snail's eye stalks cross over two different colored backgrounds. If both stalks were completely over the green leaf, the last picture would have been better in my opinion.

Thanks for the input. I'm thinking #2 is the one to print. My kid likes that one also. Since it's his project I should let him pick.

I look forward to checking out your latest reversed-lens shots. I've been wanting to get one of those rings and trying some shots with stacked lenses.

Cheers,
WK

Very nice shots in that second batch! It's amazing how much magnification you can get with that technique. What did you do to improve the sharpness this time around? Tripod? Did you finally spring for a reversing ring so the lens wasn't wobbling?

Cheers,
WK
