Did you ever have a snake you wish you never sold?

bluerosy Feb 24, 2005 10:59 PM

I had this male het Peanut Butter for sale last year.
Beautiful white and black peppered specks, almost silvery looking. Man I wish I would have kept this one! It was just a het. but I bet will turn out as a beaut as an adult.

Anyone else with pics of the one that got away?

This is a 2 year old chondro I sold about a year ago. I sold it at around 9 months of age, so I figured it wasn't done changing.......I was wrong. I've been kickin myself ever since.

get up in the morning get out of bed, give myself a kick THEN go do whatever.
of all the snakes i miss, its a female coastal phase cal king, big thick girl with nice yellows and deep brown bands. she was a kingsnake for sure. that was several years ago, but lately i've been kicking myself for selling her.
and i certainly missed out on the best years of a double het ghost pair i traded to brandon. the female was pretty awesome, but she just busted out once he got ahold of her, i am hoping for pics this spring of the male, it was no slouch either. couldn't happen to a better guy.
- here's a twist on the topic- how many times have you kicked yourself for NOT buying or trading for a snake? i would start at the top of my list when i stopped pursuing a certain pair of indigos a few years ago, and the list could go on for several days...
oh yeah, i also sold the guy below. some days i don't know what is going on...

. . . the "wishing I got a certain snake" syndrome. Happens all too often.

The one I let get away literally did get away. A wild-caught Florida watersnake. I actually think I might be slightly more fond of watersnakes than kings, but they are too labor-intensive to raise.

Nokturnel Tom Feb 25, 2005 05:36 PM

I tell you when I fell in love with Womas I was on a mission to do whatever it took to get a pair. I finally got the pair and they are awesome with one exception. Though they are young and I am definitely impatient....they are not coming through for me as far as breeding and producing. They're the only snakes in my house and not in my snake room, they're in my office and a joy to watch. Pretty active and low maintenance. But I have to wonder how many killer Kings I could now be producing if I spent the money on different projects. I think if I finally produce Womas it will be the greatest feeling someone in this hobby can experience, but until then it will drive continue to drive me nuts. Tom Stevens

I purchased a male lavender brooksi... in the pic he looked fine... when I got him, he looked horrible (x-tremely skinny) & smelled bad... now he isn't showing any interest in breeding... and he was sold to me as a proven breeder...

pikiemikie Feb 25, 2005 08:07 PM

have fecal done by your vet......mike

bluerosy Feb 25, 2005 08:12 PM

I agree with Mike. If the snake is still skinny have a fecal sample done by a vet. Chances are you can make this snake look like it should.

ZFelicien Feb 25, 2005 08:49 PM

I had him checked... nothing showed up... snakes I've fed once a week they were never that skinny, so I guess the seller just fed this guy enough to keep him alive... he has a super appetite though... I'm sure with some "love" he'll bounce back... he was just an early start to a project... when my juvenile male is ready, I'll sell him (if I'm not attached by then)

1. The "calico" Honduran...I saw it on the classifieds and for whatever reason its unique changes simply didn't register. And I think the low price--what, $1300?--tilted me toward thinking it couldn't be as neat as it seemed. It was, of course. (Interestingly, one of my buddies, also a big hondo afficionado, told me later he was kicking himself for the same reason. Neither of us understand exactly why we passed on it)

2. Two years ago a fella who owed me money wanted to sell me a pair of the Sentz-line Hypo pyros, adults. I turned them down. I think i was put off at the time by some problem-feeders. I still haven't been able to get a homozygous Sentz hypo in the years since, not even a hatchling. Have had to settle for hets.

So yeah, i've made some blunders.

bluerosy Feb 25, 2005 11:32 AM

here is another I wish I did not sell:
Hybrid (honduran milk X amel florida X calif king)

Nokturnel Tom Feb 25, 2005 11:57 AM

That is incredible, please tell me you kept back some similar ones? Tom Stevens

bluerosy Feb 25, 2005 12:05 PM

I had some similar ones but I sold them as well. I had a couple holdbacks I was not going to part with but then somebody came along with something I wanted more. Oh well.

Brandon Osborne Feb 25, 2005 12:29 PM

Man, that is sweet. One of the best albino patternless pines I've seen. Next time I see you......I'm going to kick you myself. lol. Then you can return the favor to me. Oh well, I guess we can't keep them all.

Brandon

jlassiter Feb 25, 2005 12:40 PM

Nice one Tom. Is that a sibling to the pair I got from you?

Also guys, I have bred lots of Thayeri and the first year I held back something outrageous like 3.6 initially. Over the course of the year I had buyers wanting them so I cut down the holdbacks to 1.3. Last year I only held back 1 female, but had a lousy year anyway. It is real hard to sell any of them, because they are all so nice. I just gotta think to myself "The breeding pairs can produce more."
So, there are many I have sold that I really wanted. I can't wait to see what I will have to part with this year. LOL

Here is another one of those patternless pines from Tom. I know it is off topic for the kingsnake forum, but what the hell. Just so Brandon can kick you a little harder Tom. LOL

Wow! Very nice animal! I really love those Pines, but don't And can't have any here in NC. Wish I could, though! "Big John, my 77" wide banded eastern Kingsnake is the closest thing I have to a pine snake:

BTWHow old/big are your pink pines?)Thanks,
Zee

BlueKing Feb 25, 2005 04:05 PM

Don't know how that got in there,

Zee

Nokturnel Tom Feb 25, 2005 04:36 PM

I was recently told it's Northern Pines which you can't own in NC? I am not sure....but Johns [mine] are Southerns. Tom Stevens

BlueKing Feb 25, 2005 11:46 PM

I might have to consider getting me a pair (from you) then! Thanks Tom!

Zee

jlassiter Feb 25, 2005 04:47 PM

The Patternless Pink Pines from Tom were born in 2004. They are over 24" and are only 7 months old or so. Impressive animals even as yungsters. I can't wait until they reach 5 feet or more.
And Big John is as BIG as ever. My hypo Brooksi male is catching up but I doubt he reaches that size.
Nice Eastern Zee.

John Lassiter

Here is the Hypo Brooksi male at 67.432563 inches (according to Serpentwidgets) and only 4 years old.

BlueKing Feb 25, 2005 11:45 PM

Thanks, John!
Only four years old. . . .Hmmmm - I think he's got a chance to get as big or bigger than Big John! Very nice looking & healthy Brooksi.
Let me know when he reaches 72" (should be this year, huh?).

Zee

jlassiter Feb 26, 2005 12:02 AM

No, really he is 4 1/2 years old. LOL!!
I hope he can make the 6 foot mark this year. By the way he eats it should be no problem. I don't think he will reach 77 inches like BIG JOHN though.
John Lassiter

Here is the female he is going to be paired up with this year. She is only 48 inches and 3 years old.

BlueKing Feb 26, 2005 07:16 PM

Nice female! She should be happy with HIM - most women like BIG guys, LOL!!!

ZFelicien Feb 25, 2005 07:35 PM

was that snake the only aberrant one in the clutch? what did the parents look like? I find it weird, that the only brooksi morph that comes in the striped variety are hypos...

~ZF

daveb Feb 26, 2005 07:11 AM

i think the striped trait in brooksi is going to be very similar to the way striping appeared in corns. was it hypo then aberrant then motley then striped?

ZFelicien Feb 26, 2005 10:30 AM

I have no clue what goes on in corn snakes, I've tried to understand cornsnake morphs and trait combinations but it just "aint" working... guess if I were a corn fan I'd know um all, but I have no real interest in corns...

BTW: I'm still curious as to what the parents of the striper looked like... any pix?

~ZF

jlassiter Feb 26, 2005 10:47 AM

Zenny,
There may be other lines of striped hypos out there, but Tom's striped hypo and mine for that matter come from Don Shore's line of Hypo Brooksi. Tom's nice striped hypo is from a het hypo to het hypo breeding.
It did not come about as stripes in corns did. It is more of a gene or trait that occurs in striped california kings. It is as unpredictable as calking offspring. I will let you know what pops out of my striped hypo female this year.

ZFelicien Feb 25, 2005 07:29 PM

I got this lil guy at a really nice price... $75, but it was really hard finding a suitable female... then I purchased a booked on gray bands and I changed my mind, they have the highest mortality... and are difficult to get started.... I sold him to make space... but kicked myself once I stumbled across some pix I took of him.

~ZF

jlassiter Feb 25, 2005 07:40 PM

Zenny, Nice Snake man!!!
Don't believe everything you read. If you know how to get them to eat, then it is no problem at all. I have had calkings and brooksi babies that were hard to get feeding also. Nonfeeders are not only confined to alterna and mexicana. That is a killer alterna. I would have never sold that. LOL

As for the striped hypo brooksi, I should have that one for you this year bro. You will be the second person to know. (me 1st). LOL
John Lassiter
Here is my striped adult female.

ZFelicien Feb 25, 2005 07:55 PM

keep me posted on the striper...

Not to add to the kicks, Zenny, but damn that's a gorgeous snake!

2003 female Thayeri with Skull head pattern and awesome split bands with orange tints. A guy that used to post here named KrazyK bought her and I, too kick myself from time to time when I look at my 2003 hatchling pics.

Looks like those Mahogany Brooksi that Mark Kenderdine has.
Those are (were) nice. Maybe you can produce some more Rainer.
I would take them from you if you don't want them. LOL
John Lassiter

bluerosy Feb 26, 2005 12:25 AM

Beleive it or not that is actually a hypo brooks (forgot to mention that)and I would hold a pair back for you except I sold the parents. I had to make room for new and more interesting projects.
I will have some hypo brooks X easterns that are f2's. I only produced one last year and its a real screamer. I will post pics of her soon.

jlassiter Feb 26, 2005 12:31 AM

I thought it looked Hypo too. I know Mark's aren't but they are nice too. I guess they could be called Hypo Mahoganies. LOL
Post those F2's I would love to see them. I got to see Tom's Eastern / Brooksi cross first hand and it is awesome. I would love to see a hypo version of it as well.

Keith Hillson Feb 26, 2005 07:03 AM

I got this big male from a guy in Canada along with my NJ male a few years ago. Like a dumb a$$ I sold it because I had too many Kings. He was well over 5' when I had him and last I heard he is 6' or so. He is a f1 Darien Co., GA male, 99 Hatch I think.
-

-
You can really see the Floridana influence in him he looks more like a dark Suwanee King.

bluerosy Feb 26, 2005 08:07 AM

Also looks a bit similar to the f2 eastern X hypos i produced that came out all black and white. I will post pics soon on their progress.

Keith Hillson Feb 26, 2005 09:20 AM

Yeah from the pics Ive seen and some of the people Ive talked to it seems that the s. eaxtern coast of GA has Easterns with more Floridana influence and the rest of S. GA has the Apalachicola influence in some places especially the border counties.
