Injured Giant Day Gecko Help!

dustinxj May 16, 2003 09:35 AM

I have a pair of 1 and half month old day geckos. One of them had an accident some how(I think he got stuck between the lid and cage) and it sort of skined his left front leg. Just from his side to just below his "elbow" maybe about an 1/8" from his foot. Its been about 4 days and he seemed to be doing fine, not using the leg at all, but just recently he's gotten very skinny wont eat and is turning like a hazy gray color. I have no idea how to deal with something like this so any information would be good for me!

When I first got my day gecko, I realized that some of her skin had been torn during the transfer. Needless to say I wasn't very pleased with my local pet store. Anyway, I used Betadine (NOT PEROXIDE!!!!!) in a dropper and made sure the entire area was coated (Betadine is colored so you'll know if you missed a spot). I did this for several days and it gradually healed. The skin takes awhile to regrow to its original look but it did happen. My only concern is that you didn't do this right of way. Maybe call a veterinarian and ask them about your options just to be on safe side. This info is based on my one experience with this sort of thing so if anyone can expand on it I'd be interested to learn more about it.

Thanks for the reply. Well I'm afraid it could be too late. I'm afraid he's in the process of dying unfortunatly. He's gray and looks to be shriveling. I called my vet when it first happend and he told me to leave him alone and that it would heal on its own. Apparently he was wrong, so hopefully it wont be to painful for him. Any tips on getting another one to add to the cage? When he's gone should I take him out and clean the whole cage good and then add the new gecko (with my other 3 month old)?

Sometimes the srtess of something like this causes them to freak out and not to eat etc. We breed quite a few day geckos and you usually do not have to do anything to the torn skin at all. It usually does heal on its own. you must watch for infection but in our experience it is rare that you have to do anything to them. It usually causes more stress than helps. You will not have to clean out the cage to add a new gecko but you will have to make sure that the new one is of approximately the same size. Also just to be sure you will need to watch them closely for signs of agression. Sorry for your loss and if we can help out in any way or answer any questions please contact us.
