cooling snake room

boaman1369 Feb 25, 2005 09:16 AM

The house I am living at doesn't have central air so it gets hot in the house. My ? is I have a room upstairs that would make a good snake room so I was wondering if could get a small window air conditioner and put it on a thermostat to keep it between 78-80. Any input on this would be appretiated.

I used window AC units in a house I had a couple of years ago (not for snakes, just to keep the house cool) and they had thermostats built in. I don't know how accurate they were because I was not using them for my animals so I never really checked. I would think, though, that you could just use a thermometer to see if they are off at all and then set them appropriately. I think I got them at Lowes if I remember correctly. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I will have to look around for one.

The new portable AC units available are supposed to be much more accurate than window AC's, or at least so I've heard. If not they make thermostats that can be used on either type.

The portable AC's are also quieter. A nice feature, IMO.

Where can I get a portable ac unit and how much do thet cost? The room it will be cooling is 250-300 sqft.

i think you wouldnt need to be that accurate unless you were trying to regulate the cage temps using only ambient room temps. do your cages have thier own thermostats? if so i wouldnt think it would be nessecary to get the room temps to hover around the same temp acurately.
it might make your cage heater and thermostat work harder, but you could save money with a cooling unit that isnt accurate to the degree.

I will be heating the cages with ultratherm heat pads and alife thermostats.

I was shopping for some appliance or another last summer and they were pretty much at every store. They might be more popular out here since you see quite a few homes with no HVAC.

Don't know about BTU's, etc. Should be easy to research.
