Anyone had experience with the collaspable cages?

chibicricket Feb 25, 2005 12:43 PM

I've managed to convince my fiance of letting me get another iguana. Actually, I convinced him of letting me set up a sort of herp zoo in our new home.... I don't like caging up iguanas, but it's almost needed when they are babies to keep them out of trouble. I was looking online and found these cages that would be almost perfect for a temporary home until he's allowed to roam free. (look at the link below) Zoomed makes over 100 gallon ones, and they only run about $100. I'm just wondering, since they snap into place, are they sturdy enough for a like 1-2 ft baby iguana? If anyone has any info, it would be greatly appreciated. If they work well, I might just use them to house the water dragons and frilled lizards I really want to get in the future.
example of what I'm talking about

I haven't used those particular cages but I have used the reptariums for our cornsnakes. The reptariums I like because they have zippered openings so no matter how hard something pushes it can't get out - unless it figures the zipper out. We're going to try and put our savannah monitor in one soon (she's outgrowing the current tank) and I'll let you know how that goes. The mesh seems really tough though and able to stand up to a lot.

Yea, the mesh lining was my only real concern. I hate to use glass tanks unless they are for smaller animals. Too much of a pain to clean and move around. I think I'm going to buy one of the ZooMed reptariums that are like 75 - 100 gallons, but definitely let me know how things work out with your monitor. Like if there is any risk of chewing or scratching through the mesh.

I've had Green Iguanas, Chinese Water Dragons, and a Savannah monitor tear thru a reptarium with ease. It took the Sav less than 12 hours. I don't recommend them for permanent caging.

It definitely wouldn't be for permanent caging, just for about the first 2-3 years, then I plan on doing the same thing I did with my other iguana, get rid of the cage completely. I only plan to use the cage until I can get my new iguana tamed, and trained.

Hey guys and gals, just wanted to let ya know.

This post is a response for both of you, I have some info that might change your minds. As for Chibi, right now I have my juvi ig in one of those cages, 80. I thought he was fine until just recently he pulled his nail out and blood was everywhere. He was frightened because something fell and scared the crap out of him. I'm now changing into the cages with the plastic base structure with the mesh-type outline with zippers. I would prefer that because i would hate to have that happen to anyone else's ig. But it's just my opinion.

ptdnsr, I wouldn't recommend using anything besides a glass/pexiglass cage for a monitor. The open air would not support the proper humidity level and it just wouldn't work. You can't really put that much soil into the cages for proper burrowing. And they just aren't big enough. There's pics on the Monitor Forums of cages that are of proper size and made from the proper materials. Like he said, they'll chew right thru that anyways.

If you have any questions or anything there's plenty of posts on the Monitor forums of cage dimensions and directions for making a good substrate for burrowing. Just letting you know if ya didn't. good luck with everything.

I got an email response from someone at LLLReptile about this. He said that a small iguana up to about 2 ft would be fine to put in it. But from his experience, anything larger rips through it. So, I'd have to agree with Tor on the monitor thing. A monitor of any length is a lot stronger than a full grown iguana, so it might just turn one of those cages into a million pieces.

I think its ok. I do love wire cages, i think good ventilation is essential to keep reptiles healthy. All my 9 reptiles are caged in plastic wire cages.Besides that during the winter its easier to keep them warm. I need only 2 blow heaters for 9 cages!

Good to know. I'm going to be getting another ig sometime in the spring, but I'm starting on getting its cage all setup now. I want everything to be perfect for the new little guy/ or girl.

if you get 2 boys when they grow up they will try to kill eachother.Literally speaking.I dont think you will be able to keep both in the same cage when they reach sexual maturity, around 2 and a half 3 years old.Look at these photos:

Dont you think those guys look happy living together?

One of the sweet guys you saw in the first photo turned into a carrot monster each time he saw his old cage "friend".

It's ok, my 15 ft babe lives with my parents. I just moved out recently, but they wouldn't let me take him with.
