The best monitor

tuataratoo Feb 25, 2005 01:11 PM

My wife and I are thinking of working with a monitor species. We have been doing research and would like some info. from anyone who has a monitor and especially those of you who breed them to which ones you consider the best to care for, breed, easiest to handle, etc. All input is greatly appreciated, we are leaning towards peach throats right now but are interested in getting some input from experienced keepers.
Thanks in advance,
Rob

Its going to be hard to not give a bias answer.

I think you really have to tell me (US).

What your looking to get out of your monitor.

What can you offer to it, space, time, care, handling, food, etc..

Once you give us or atleast me this information I can then give you my educated answer, otherwise all you will get is my bias answer of what monitor I like best. But it is not about me it is about you.

We are looking for smaller sized monitors. Our enclosure we will be using is 6 foot long 4 foot tall and 3 feet deep. This is for a breeding project although all of our animals whether breeders or not are treated as pets first. We have been working with reptiles for over 10 years , mainly geckos and smaller lizards. My wife and daughter are home working with the animals on the farm all day. We realize the final decision of what monitor is best for us, is ours, but we are just looking for peoples personal feelings and experiences with the monitors they have raised.
Thanks Again,
Rob

going by you wanting something easy to handle, smaller, and your wife and kid will be caring for them. I would have to also suggest ackies.

Are not being bred in captivity. So they do not meet your requirements.

The only monitors that meets your requirements are V.acanthurus, Spinytailed monitors. They are a smallish monitor, getting around thirty inches, but mostly smaller.

They are tame(for the most part)(at least tame considering they are a monitor) are bred in captivity on a somewhat regular basis. They most likely bred more often then other species because of their size and they require so much less.

Which brings me to the point, most medium sized to larger monitors require so much more work and materials, that they are normally not suited to the typicial home owner. Good luck or your search. FR

Whenever I get this question I really don’t know what to answer, I can only vouch for my preference, jobies are NO1 for me even if others are probably better suited for most keepers. I just love everything about them. However I do understand how appealing some of the smaller species can be, Iv kept them for years but I have no real passion for them.
Just my opinion.

not sure what your looking for,but I have a male and female pair of dumi's that I would like to sell to a healthy home. They are both easily handled. They have a great vet and are clean of health problems. They are sharing quarters now and have been since the day I brought home the male. They are doing very well as far as I can tell. Niether have ever attempted to bite. Let me know if you want anymore info.
I'm new to this forum but not monitors. I have been reading it almost daily for a couple of weeks now. The majority of people posting have a lot of great advice. I'm learning alot and it is much appreciated. I'll be posting often.
