feeding fruitfly larve to baby anole

knit_lizard Feb 25, 2005 03:16 PM

Hi. I have a culture of fruitflies whose larve recently "hatched". All of the matured fruitflies have either died or been fed to our baby anole. I was so disgusted with the larve that I was determined to ditch that culture for a fresh one. Unfortunately for me, the local pet shop didn't have any cultures that were ready nor did they have any pin heads in stock.

Is it alright to feed the larve to the baby? I had read bad things about mealworms chewing their way through anole stomachs and wondered if there's the same danger with larve and babies.

thanks...

The fruitfly larvae shouldn't be a problem. As near as I can tell, the mealworm story is one of those "urban legends". Everyone seems to know someone "who knows someone" etc. but I have yet to see something like that happen in the 40 years I have been raising Anoles.
The story likely got started with a wild caught Anole that was infested with blowfly larvae ( a fairly common event) and a disgorged mealworm. They two events were mistakenly connected and the story evolved from there.
