Help...my turtle HATES me!

golfdiva Feb 25, 2005 05:10 PM

She use to be such a sweet little painter! She would come when I called, take food from my hand, stay on her basking place even when I was cleaning the "pond"!

Then she got shell rot. I took her to the vet and I have to keep her out of the water most of the day, and put two different kinds of meds on her shell twice a day.

She hates all the messing around, and now she hates me! She dives and swims aways when I enter the room. She hides when I'm near the "pond". She won't come anywhere near me, let alone take food from me!!

I miss her! Will she ever forget me???

Oh, I have an alligator snapper like that. She's like a dog but when I started brushing her shell, well... she's never the same again... and you know how much work to tame a snapper... I think you just do what you have to do and after a couple of years or even decades, your turtle will start being sweet again.

Well, now I'm just hoping she lives long enough to forgive me! She doesn't seem to be improving, and she seems to be quite stressed from being "dry docked". When she does get in the water, I think she might not be eating, but it's hard to tell, cause she only hides if I'm in the room!!

I would think that an aquatic turtle that dives into the water when disturbed would be a sign of healthy, normal behavior.

When she was healthy, she wasn't bothered by me being around. Now that she is having shell problems, she hides from me!

The whole process is very stressfull on them and shell rot can take a long time to clear up. Give her time, after her treatement is over she should begin to behave like herself again, but it might take awhile

Thanks for the reassurance! It looks like the shell rot is finally starting to clear up! She will take food from my hand again, but if I pick her up to look at her shell, she gets all upset and we start all over again!!
