Breeding closely related corns

dewittg Feb 25, 2005 05:27 PM

I'm considering getting a male / female pair of corns with the intent of breeding them. Most breeders prefer to sell pairs or individual males. My concern with getting a pair from one breeder is that they would likely be fairly closely related. A couple questions:

1) Do breeders typically ship siblings when a male / female pair is purchased?

2) How closely related should breeding pairs be? For example, is it reasonable to breed a pair that have different mothers but share a common father?

If the snakes you are getting from a single breeder are of a rarer morph...you can almost guarantee that they are closely related...possibly siblings, if not probably so.

It is no problem at all to breed full brothers and sisters to one another. In fact, nearly all morphs are established in this way. The only real issues seem to arrive after MULTIPLE generations of such breedings take place.

Hope that helps a bit...

Thanks for the response. I did run across an interesting discussion of inbreeding at:
