Sorry I grabbed the wrong photo file but it's a beautiful snake I found while on vacation the south June 2004. Not to worry he's still out there for someone else to see. I don't keep venomous. The photo opportunity was too much for me. One of those photo moments that only comes around once. Meaning I'll probably never see one like that again in my lifetime in the wild.

He's (or she) (I use "present-tense" cause I'm sure he's still our there)about 5 to 6 feet long and he was crossing the road-I hulled him-into the grass before he got hit by the truck behind me. He was not pleased but I did put him on the side he was heading to-he seemed not to unhappy about that part. He was hot too-it was about 95 degrees outside. I'm guessing he was heading for the pond on the other side of the road for water.

Would that be a motley or striped black rat???
Cool snake. I never saw one like that before.
Are the adults wild caught?

I'm not sure what to call the colour actually.

jlassiter Feb 25, 2005 09:31 PM

The "color" will darken, I think. Normal black rats are born with patterns then turn nearly completely black sometimes. It looks like a striped mutant gene of some sort to me.
Cool, no matter what you call it.

You should keep ALL the offspring. That is a neat project in the making. I would keep all the babies, breed some siblings together and also some back to the parents. After those test breeding clutches hatch you'll have an idea of its potential. Tom Stevens

You got an eastern diamondback out of that? J/K cool looking baby, cant wait to see what it looks like when it is fully grown. Keep those babies and breed them later on, you may be on to a new color morph with that.

Langly2112 Feb 25, 2005 08:58 PM

they looked awful!! so don't say it-I know. Much better now.
but it's one of the only photos I have of them together. Thought I should explain.

duffy Feb 26, 2005 07:35 AM

Some of the questions were already asked: WC or CB? I am wondering if the parents are siblings. Where DID the parents come from? Also, I am assuming that you got more than one offspring. Any other strange looking ones? How many babies, and what did they look like?

Cool...weird! Please post pics as the little one(s) grow. Very interesting. Duffy

The parent are legally collected WC. I have no idea if they are related.(but you'd almost think they might be since they both carried the gene for this-I only just figured they both had to be to have 5 (4 of those died-BTW) of 20 showing the odd colour and pattern-using the trusty genetics class I took-5 would be RR/10 would be NR/and 5 would be NN-right?) I know how many were what because when they didn't hatch I cut open the eggs-just for my own curiousity. (They simply couldn't get out the eggs-wish I'd have thought of that)

It comes down to (both dead and alive)5 were oddly patterned like the photo, 5 were most of less normal looking, and 10 seem to show different colouration-they remind me of very dark corns reddish/brown saddles out lined with black on a tan to cinnimon background. At first chance they remind one of a Greenish Rat-but I have 2 babies of those-and when put next to them-they look completely different, it's no problem for me to tell the difference.(no corns are native to the area they were collected BUT there are Eastern Milksnakes but what are the possibilities of that happening?)

I'm trying to get some good colour correct photos of the others-to post here. The incandenscent light is casting them too yellow.

This is very interesting. What locale are the parents from?? Are they siblings or just a pair that were caught from the same locale?? The offspring definitely has some sort of hidden gene. I just wonder if one of the parents are carrying a hidden gene or is possibly intergraded?? Pretty cool. If you have more pics of the offspring post them. Was just the one hatchling patterned like that??

You know you have to post more pics and supply alittle more info!! I would keep all of them and breed them back to each other and the parents in a few years. You might be on to something.
