Marsh Brown Snake

CrittersMailToo Feb 25, 2005 09:31 PM

I will be getting one of these soon and would like to know the proper care of one. WHat size tank will he need? What type of set-up? I was thinking i could put soil on the bottomwith boiled leaves and a patch of grass and some pine needles for decoration. Also i was wondering how can i make dirt from out side safe for the snake and safe for my other herps in the same room? I know to feed it slugs and worms. Does anyone know how to sex them? Maybe if i'm lucky i can do what herper helmz did and produce an albino. Anyway, thanks in advance for the help

Hi there:

I am assuming that you are referring to Storerea dekayi victa, a.k.a. Florida brown snake. I own one of these as well. Care is identical to that of a northern brown snake, but they seem to prefer higher temperatures. I keep mine in a 10-gallon glass aquarium. For the substrate I use ESU reptile jungle mix, topped with moist green sphagnum moss. Being more semi-aquatic than Storerea dekayi, you may want to provide a shallow water dish. I use a light for mine, but it is not reqired.
The substrate that you are planning to use sounds excellent. I have used a similar mixture for the northern species. Dirt from outside works safely for me. Nothing bad has ever happened for me while using this ground cover. These are GREAT little snakes.

P.S. where are you getting it from?

Actually i was refering to storeria dekayi limnetes. Are you sure that dirt from outside won't effect my other herps in the same room, and that i should bake it? I'm getting it from an ad i saw on another site for $5, and i get to skip out on shipping because he's very close to me so i'm just gonna pick it up.

Hi there:

Wonderful species! I hope that you enjoy it. Dekay's snakes are my favorite group of snakes. Unfortunately, I hardly know anyone who has them. I used to catch Northern brown snakes, study them awhile, and release them at a local vacant lot. Now they tore down my secret snake hunting haven to make way for a strip mall.
Dirt from outdoors probably will not do anything. I have used it many times, and nothing ever happened. All of the things that the animals may encounter from the soil, they will probaably encounter in the wild as well. Also, I love the smell of moist soil from outdoors, enfused with the aroma of a nice Storerea.
Please tell me anything interesting you might observe. Do you work with any other smaller snakes?

I'm not experienced enough to probe or pop. I'm just a kid, and no one in my area knows how to probe or pop.I'll just wait 'til an experienced herpetoculterist moves here which will be soon. Anyway thanks for the help everyone.

I HATE it when that happens! It is so dissapointing, isn't it? That has happened to me before. You have so much hope built up, and then, just like that, your not getting it. It only seems to happen with small snakes too! Hope you can find one!
