Typical Sorong?? .....OR

tim16a Feb 26, 2005 12:32 AM

What would be the "typical" coloring of an adult Sorong GTP? I would love to see some pictures of the more common colors displayed. I want to see what this little guy may look like

Yes,I'm pretty sure that your chondro is an aru type. He shows the typical aru neonate markings (dark spots with some white inside...). Mainland types neonates(sorong jayapura,lereh...) have very different markings (dark dorsal stripe and dark lateral spots without white inside...).
Sorry for my english

This is one of my arus just as it was starting it's color change. I agree with Paolo that yours also appears to be an aru type. The merauke locale type babies resemble this neonate patterning also, but very unlikely that you would have been sold a merauke that was misrepresented as a sorong.

Aru? Biak? Something else?

Although the first animal does resemble an Aru, without knowing for sure what the parents were, there is no way to tell just by looking at baby patterns. As Kam from Bushmaster said last weekend, some mainland types are without the stereotypical "striping". I'm not trying to argue with anyone. Just trying to keep things straight. I believe many dealers will mislead potential buyers into buying whatever they are looking for.

I think that the difference between aru and biak juvenile patterns is that in the arus the spots are darker, from deep brown to black, in the biaks the spots are reddish.

The reason I bring this up is, the neo pictured above is neither Aru or Biak....and as far as I'm aware, the bloodline has neither locales mixed into it. The original animals from this lineage were reported to come from PNG. I just don't see any way to tell until they go through the ontogenetic color change, UNLESS you know the parental background. I agree with you that the original poster's animal looks like a "typical" Aru hatchling, but there is really no way to be certain. I would call it a beauty no matter what locale it is.
