Do tortoises like thier heads rubbed???

shawne1 Feb 26, 2005 06:02 AM

Hi,
This is a silly question...But, Do tortoises like thier head
rubbed...My little over 1yr old redfoot totoise 'Sage' seems to really like his head rubbed..When I rub his head, he sticks, strains his head out higher to touch my finger and will let me rub his head.. Is this a sign of actually liking his head rubbed or some kind of instinctual behavior??? Does anyone else's tortoise like thier head rubbed???

Thanx, Shawne1

Yes, I think some of them do. Our tortoises do the same thing when they are petted on the head and under the chin.

I have a two year old Redfoot, Rufus, and he absolutely loves having his head rubbed. He is the most responsive tortise that I own. He is not shy in any fashion but will push his head up under my finger for rubbing. I almost lost him last Spring to a RI and so thankful that he survived and has tripled his weight since then.

"Tickle/scratch".. them at the rear of their carapce just above the tail.. watch them dance! (it works for my adults anyway)

Passport.. you asked to see my hatchling? ..taking a step at just a few hours out of the egg!!
