Whiptail having trouble waking up...

Paullywog Feb 26, 2005 10:04 AM

I am worried about the whiptail my friend gave me. It started hibernation by itself, probably in October or November, so i turned off the lights for the winter until last week. It is really slow and skinny, as to be expected, but it looks really dehydrated. To tell the truth, i dont know if it licks dew or drinks from a dish, so i tried both. She is too slow to do anything and im just really concerned. I havent been on here a while, so at the same time, hey everyone! Thanks if you can help.

P.S> I followed PHEve's brumation instructions from cold blooded chronicles. NO i dont blame PHEve, it just seems ive done something wrong or Im too worried about all this.

was getting thin brumation should be stopped. When ever ya notice them losing weight, you stop.
And did you give her water during the time she was bruamting?

Sounds as if she is dehydrated. Get some fluids into her as soon as possible. Water with a eyedropper, many people use pedialyte/ water, to get their stength back. Gatorade in an emergency would also be helpful.

I would also kick up her heat a few degrees. Let us know how shes doing

yes, she had water all winter long. I couldnt see her getting thin because she made her own burrow. I really wanted to get her out of hibernation, but my mom was all" its all natural they sleep this long in nature". good thing i convinced my mom with your article. I fortunately have good news. She was soaking in her water when i came in and her eyes are open again. i have a heat lamp making it about 80 degrees in the basking spot now, and uvb running of course. Thanks for your advice! She seems to be getting better fast. Sorry to bring such worry.
