Keeping chuckwallas in pairs?

Sofia_C Feb 26, 2005 02:28 PM

Hi everyone
I have an adult chuckwalla male and I've been thinking for a long time about getting him a girlfriend. I've been a bit sceptical, since my bearded dragon pair didn't work out (the male harassed the female) and I had to separate them. They now live separatly and each have their own roomy enclosure, but I would love to have the chuckwalla pair together.

How are chuckwallas in pairs? Will the male harass the female or do they usually work out fine together? Do bites and accidents happen? I don't want any injuries. I'm only interested in getting one female, do they work better in small groups than in pairs?

Any input and experiences would be very appriciated.

Thank you.

Great question! I have 3 male chucks in 3 different cages. One male lives totally peacefully with 4 females. I never see any aggression or sexual activity going on in this group, other than frequent push-ups by the male just to tell everyone whose territory it is. This male is totally aggressive toward the other two males, and I'm positive he's a male.

The other two males go absolutely ballistic when I try to pair them with a female. They repeatedly rush their female and bang into her so hard that she flies across the enclosure. I don't have the heart to leave the females in with these guys, there's so much rough stuff.

The only way you'll know how it's going to be is to get a female and try to cohabitate the pair, knowing that peace may reign or all hell may break loose. If you end up with two separate cages of chucks because you can't stand the violence, then so be it; they're cool enough to justify two cages!

That's my two-cents' worth! Good luck!

I finally introduced a female (both male and female I got from DVL)...he went nuts for her for the first day. This lizards was so mellow and laid back. I put in the girl, and you would have thought he was on some Ginko Biloba. He chased and tried to mate all day long. After the first day, he was just his usual self. Except now, he just laid aroud with his new girl. He didn't even head bob after the first day.

This Spring should be interesting. I've hibernated them both...I'm pretty certain I'll see more agressive breeding behaviour this year.

Nice male chuck you have too by the way...nice RED!

to keep trios(Male and 2 females). I say this because during the breeding season males become very amorous and this is stressful for the females. If you have 2 he will devide his attention instead of always chasing just the one.

Hi!

I have a terrarium measuring 160cm*60cm (5ft,3inch*2ft/width*deep), can I house there a trio of chuckwallas (1male, 2females)?

I'm still in two minds of getting a blue tongued skink or chuckwallas, I already have a pair of uromastyxs.
