*Sigh* I don't think my american toad eggs were fertilized

Laurah Jul 07, 2003 10:59 PM

Its been about 4 days now since my american toads laid eggs, but I don't think they were fertilized. I did have a couple in amplexus, but this was their 'first time' and perhaps they didn't really know what they were doing. ? She did lay some of her eggs on the ground actually! He was on her for a good 3 days before they laid eggs. Is it possible he just wasn't releasing sperm when she was laying them? The eggs seem to be rotting now- the water smells slightly stinky and the whites of the eggs are getting bigger and fuzzy. Judging from the information I found on the web the white part is the yolk and that it should be dissappearing rather than getting bigger. Waaaah! Oh well. There do seem a few of the eggs, from what I can tell, are all black and have no white- maybe some were fertilized? Is this possible? Thank for any help.

Don't have experience with American Toads, but its entirely possible for the eggs ALL the be fertile, but some are going bad nonetheless. I would separate the bad from the good. Its also possible that some were and some weren't fertile. And yes, possible that first season, they don't quite get it right. The fact that they laid eggs means you are doing something right and they'll do it again, and you'll be swimming in eggs, tads, and toadlettes soon. Good luck!
