I feel like I'm missing something here because I don't see why Johnson thermostats get better ratings than Ranco. Other than the smaller size and a few extra features (which I don't need), I don't see much of a difference. I've noticed that with my Ranco, sometimes the temperature will go 1 or 2 degrees over my desired temperature frame set by the differential. This is due to an inertial effect where the cage still warms up a smidge even after the thermostat shuts the heat off because of the ambient temperature of the house. However, with my Johnson, I've noticed the temps go up to 5 degrees over the temperature frame I've set with the differential. Am I just not setting up the thermostat correctly? This makes me uncomfortable with using the Johnson.
I feel more confident with my Ranco because it's a lot easier for me to use, the instruction manual was easier for me to understand, and I pretty much figured out how to get it working in a matter of minutes, whereas the Johnson took some time for me to figure out.
I need to purchase a new thermostat soon. I'm leaning towards buying another Ranco but I feel like I should give Johnsons another chance. Any thoughts?
By the way, I keep my reptiles in three separate rooms (hence the need for a third controller). I basically went with the Johnson to install in my brother's room because he didn't want to have to put up with the loud clicking of my Ranco.
