Looking for a female.... will this work?

BryanR. Feb 26, 2005 06:20 PM

I've come to the conclusion that finding a healthy adult female water dragon for sale in Arizona is extremely unlikely. I may just get a 14-16" sexed female? However my 26" male will be with it. Will the female be okay this small?

You should house your new dragon separately until she is nearly the same size as your male. You male will want to mate with her, and 14-16 inches is way too small. She will probably die from the stress, or from becoming egg-bound. You should house new reptiles separately for several months anyway, to quarentine them, even if they are the same size.

Yeah I figured I found decent prices on 55 gallon aquariums. 69 dollars plus shipping. I think I may get a 55 gallon aquarium If I cant find and adult female and house her in there until shes at maybe 20-24" But the 55 gallon tank will be kinda small for her at that size so I have move her out as soon as I can. I'll also use this tank to house any hatchlings that I may get later on.

I agree, keep them seperated and have fecals done on the new female to make sure she is healthy. When she is the saem size as the male you can put them together. Also, if you are getting an unsexed lizard you will definately want them seperated in case the smaller one turns out to be a male

Yes I agree with the quarantine remark. Personally with that much of an age and size descrepancy I would keep them seperrated untill the female was 24". That is the size recommned by most of the experts on water dragons for sexual maturity. I have heard males can be quite the little horn dogs so no need to subject a young female to undue stress IMO. Good Luck.
