Bird seed as bedding

EB924 Feb 26, 2005 08:37 PM

Based on what i have read i think using bird seed as a bedding would be the best choice, however i'm having a problem finding the right kind. Every single wild bird seed mix i've seen in stores has sunflower seeds in it, and often other ingrediated which don't sound good to me, like crushed corn. I can get some that doesn't have too much sunflower seed and perhaps i could sift them out, but that sounds like it might be too much of a hassle. Any suggestions? I imagine ordering this stuff over the internet would mean some serious shipping charges.

I had the same problem with the sunflower seed inclusions. I got some fine screen from the hardware store and sifted the seed from the bag to a 5 gal. bucket. It is a bit of a hassle, but it's really not a big deal. And you can feed the sunflower seeds to the birds in an outdoor feeder because they love 'em.

Here are a couple of other options. If you have a feed store in the area, sometimes they'll sell millet, which is the seed you want. You can also find it at most bulk food type stores, however it might be a bit pricey as a food grade product. You really don't need much though. Uro's don't tend to dig and will sink if you make it deep. 1/8 to 1/2 inch deep is plenty deep.

You can run but you can't hide... unless you're a uro

I get mine at a garden store that sells all kinds of wild bird seed - they sell 25 lb bags of white millet (millet only). When I lived in Salem, there was a store there that is a "bird lover" store - all kinds of feeders, seed, etc. Look for some place that might cater to bird watchers as they'll have a veriety of mixes.

in our area has a good selection of birdseed, if you have one you might want to check it out--I just saw some stuff labelled 'no waste' seed made by national geographic that has no sunflower seeds. they also has several bags of one type of seed or another, so they probably have plain millet.
