The necessity for the use of UV is a very debated issue. I myself, and the top gecko breeders in the country (Jon Boone and Jay Sommers) hardly ever use UV, if at all. The only time I have ever noticed anything with it, is with my anoles and bearded dragons, and the only noticeable difference from my observations has been coloration. I use normal flourescents with virtually everything else. Bearded dragsons and anoles are diurnal though, and the species in question, is nocturnal. Hemidactylus brookii do not need UV. The link below shows my H. brookii.
