Rabbits

burmaboy Feb 27, 2005 07:29 AM

I am at a crossroads with my burms. Average size is about 9ft.
I have been feeding collosal rats from RodentPro.
I need to switch over to rabbits.
3 small rabbits equals a little more than 3 collosal rats.
Which is the amount I give every 10 days.None are obese.
Would medium rabbits be ok? they are around 2 lbs or so.
Or are they a tad big for my snakes?
I need to place an order this week. Any help?
Smalls or mediums? The polls are open.

I would try maybe one or two small rabbits, and maybe order some meds. But 2 lbs rabbits from collasal rats is a pretty big switch. I just recently switched my conda over to 1/4lbs to 1lbs rabbits from jumbo rats, there wasn't a whole lot of difference in girth, but there was some, and that still counts. It's always better to be safe than sorry

if you have burms all of an avaerage of 9 feet then you should probably have had them on rabbits for a while now. how old are your burms? i have a 5 year old male who eats between 4 and 6 large rabbits every 2 weeks..he is 16 1/2 feet and not obese, my two sri lankans are 7-8 month old sibblings and are about to switch over to rabbits as they eat jumbo rats like popcorn 6-7 each per feed which is on the same schedule as my big boy. so i think what we need to know is..how old are your burms, thier girth, thier weight(avg.) , and how many rats are they eating per feed on your 10 day schedule.no two snakes eat, or act alike but i think if we know some more about yours we can maybe come up with something...good luck

Wow, you have 8 month old sir lankin's eating 7 jumbo rats every 2 weeks! I have a 20 month old male burm that is just over 9ft and 25lbs. I give him 4 huge rats every 3 weeks. I've given him very small rabbits before that he has eaten without a problem. I tried him on a 2 pounder twice and I ended up throwing away $25 worth of rabbit becasue he didnt eat them. Im gonna wait til hes about 10ft to offer a 2 lb rabbit again so I'm sure he'll eat it.

Do you guys think I'm under feeding? He appears to me to be in great shape. Isn't 25 - 30 lbs average for my guy?

I hear alot of talk of 6 footers eating rabbits like crazy but my guy has a very small head and just can't do that even at his size now.

No your not under feeding at all, he sounds healthy. Superfly, you do somthing we like to call powerfeeding, which my friend is not healthy. Just because your snakes will always eat when offered does NOT mean they should be fed that much. You need to cut way back on your feeding schd., I'd say more like 2-3 jumbo rats at most every 2-3 weeks, and maybe 1 jumbo rabbit every month. As others have posted before, overfeeding is a high cause of short life spans in snakes. Just some advice.

rich as i said earlier different snakes eat different ways, the other poster says i am power feeding but it i do not believe i am. i have had burms and retics all my life, i have had great results and have fed then according to how they want to eat...my larger of the two sibbling female sri lankans eats much more than her sister..but her head is larger and her processing of her food is also faster...so even though she is a sibbling she is still different from her sister. the smaller female eats 2-3 jumbo rats every 2 weeks...while she eats between 5 and 7 depending on how actively she hunts the cage. , they are both growing great and as these are my first 2 sri lankans i am watchin carefully their growth and eating. they are having great sheds, and the vet here has been amazed about the coloration and health of these girls. my male has had times where he has gone 5 months without eating...i too have wasted a lot of cash trying to feed when he isnt eating but these guys are moody so when he eats i am happy, when he doesnt watch for things like RI, and other problems..then i consult the vets . so back to your burm...he sounds perfectly healthy for the avereage burm, 8-9 feet, 30 pounds..that is good... i will try to post some pics of my "overfed sri lankans on here in a day or two..i am tring to figure out how to do the pics thing here..and ill send a pic or rameses..my 16 1?2 foot male..5 years old and perfectly healthy!...if i can find my old pics from when i used to breed back in the 80's ill show ya my 19 year old, 26 foot female..my god was she a hottie!

I've got a 10ft(or so) male thats weighs about 28 pounds and he can eat a 5 pound rabbit. Just give whatever looks like the right size.
