DOR THAYERI

serpentdan Feb 27, 2005 10:18 AM

Since most people have never seen a Nuevo Leon Kingsnake in the wild, I thought I share this photo. Some of you may have seen this snake before but for those who haven't, this is a DOR thayeri that me and a couple buddies found back in July 2000. It was still writhing when we discovered it. It was likely hit by a tractor trailer truck that passed us going in the opposite direction towards Linares. We were heading towards Galeana. A rain storm had just passed through the canyons and road was wet. The air was humid. It was about an hour after sun down.

Note how thin this adult thayeri is. It's not a fat sausage like many captive thayeri. This is how I try to keep my males - lean. This snake had the cleanest yellow I had ever seen on a thayeri. The first band behind the head is peach. It was quite a thrill to see this snake in our head lights. I thought it was a coral snake at first.

Dan,
That must have been very exciting to see. I wish the laws were not so screwy in Mexico. I sure would like to some day be able to find Mexicana in the wild. I have seen those pics before but never heard the story behind it. I thank you for the information and great rare pics of wild Thayeri.
BTW......It did have some nice yellow, HUH???
Thank you Dan,

Yes, it had very nice yellow. Not the prettiest red, but rich yellow. Dan
