mixed critters....

vtnotary Feb 27, 2005 10:53 AM

I've had some anoles and fire belly toads for a while now and all of a sudden, I've managed to convert my wife into a herp enthusiast....

She wants to "eventually" convert her 75 gallon aquarium into a vivarium for the herps....

Can we safely put green anoles and fire belly toads in the same vivarium?

Suggestions for layout, plants, etc on such a project.

TIA

In a word -- No!

I'll try to offer some advice...

Many people say not to mix any species.. Not to offend anyone here, but many people on these forums are huge reptile lovers and so they will always say not to mix, even though a lot of the times its ok.

But I will tell you NOT to mix anoles with firebellys...firebelly totas leave a toxin in the water and air that will usually kill your other animals (even frogs!). I would suggest putting them with another type of frog.

Pet stores have them with Green Tree frogs, and although pet stores usually aren't very smart, I think this would be ok as long as the cage was high and big enough (75 should do it).

I'm planning to have a few anoles in my 30gal hex with a few red eye tree frogs and a green tree frog. I think it should be fine.

Full grown Red Eyed Tree Frogs will eat anoles but Common Green Tree Frogs are unlikely to do so unless the anole is very small.
