Finally, I've got copulating going on.

fishkiller Feb 27, 2005 11:20 AM

Just put my new 01 male in together during a cage cleaning. He was taking interest so I left him in overnight to wake up to this. They've been at it for over 24 hrs.Now I need to find out how long should I leave him in there.

Hey Fish, Leave him in there!!!, unless you think, the female needs to be fed,and judging from your pic,she has plenty of weight on her. It has been my expirence that the males refuse to eat during breeding,so I would not worry about feeding him. My pairs breed for a day or maybe 2 and then take a break for a few days, then they go right back at it again. If you remove him you may miss out on critical copulations.

Sounds good, I'll just leave them alone for a while. Don't want to mess anything up.

You are best to leave them be together whether or not they are copulating. There is a paper out that theorizes the presence of a male is necessary for females to ovulate. I find that STP's (bloods and borneos) participate in some recreational copulation without environmental stimulation. It is the environmental stimulation as well as the presence of the male during key times that causes the female to ovulate.

Hey Ethan,
Very nice! I have to say that that is one fine looking pair. As was said by others, unless there is something other than feeding or emergency or cleaning need to attend to, there shouldn't be any need to separate them. Males sometimes continue to eat, and I have males that will eat during the breeding period and will continue to breed thereafter, however, there is no harm done if left in with the female and feedings halted for the duration of the breeding period. You might also, consider dropping temps during the breeding period to stimulate egg and sperm development during the breeding period. Although, there is good evidence to suggest that females and males will breed regardless, of the temperatures being lowered or not, there is also, evidence to suggest that egg and sperm development will increase with cooler temperatures during that critical-period.

Thanks everyone for the advise. As for the temps its hard to monitor since I still haven't gotten a thermostat yet.I'm constantly working my dimmer switch trying to keep moderate to lower temps. As long as I don't go on vacation some where I'll be o.k.

yeah, she's malaysian, but I don't think he is, pretty sure he's sumatran. You can't tell them the two locales apart anyway so I wasn't worried about it.
