Heating rack systems using heat tape

Guru901 Jul 08, 2003 12:11 AM

Ive looked at some different plans for building rack systems and I think I basically got down what I want to do. The only thing im worried about is using the heat tape to heat the rack. I was thinking of putting it vertically down the back but was wondering the best way to attach it? Do I actually tape it to the back wall or would that be a fire danger? I was going to use pegboard as the back wall... I just dont wanna burn my house down!! lol Any help would be great.

I currently have 2 rack units using heat tape. I did not build either. From the looks of mine it appears to be stapled to the melamine.

Also I am thinking of building an additional rack, what kind of heat tape are you thinking of using and where did you find it?

thanks,
Rob

I plan on using some from big apple herp..(www.bigappleherp.com) 11" is what seems to be recomended by most to avoid hot spots.. but I think it all depends on your rack set up.

I use the exact method you are describing for all my racks. 11" heat tape running vertically and peg board for the back. What I do is attach the heat tape with tiny tacks with large heads on the very outside of the heat tape (you don't want to go through any electrical parts). Then I screw on the peg board back, making sure not to put any screws through the heat tape. This works fine for me and NO FIRES!

cool thanks for all the input!! How about using foil tape to attach it.. someone was telling me about foil tape but not sure if that would be better or if it may peel off over time?

I have used foil tape in the past and it does work. The only reason I decided to use tacks for the heat tape and screws for the peg board is that it will make it easier if I ever have to pull the peg board off and replace the heat tape. I'm not sure how long this stuff lasts, and I have seen quite a few burned pieces of 11" heat tape. So, with this system, I was planning on replacing it every few years.

Just like you, I don't want to burn my house down!

Sounds like a good idea.. I think I'll use tacks then also.. wasnt thinking about the replacing aspect.. If I start a fire my wife will never let me keep another reptile!!! lol So I better do this right!
